If every race had a unique podium hat, this is what each race would use.

Inspired by some posts asking this question, I reached peak offseason (and peak lockdown) and thought I'd make an attempt to go all out and actually put together a comprehensive list. I've really tried to research into these but as you'll see in some cases it wasn't easy, and I've also had to group a few races together. Please feel free to correct me if you are from said countries and know of a better answer. Enjoy!
2019 Calendar Races (Plus some others which would also use the same hat):
Australia – Cork Hat
An absolute no brainer to start us off easy. Corks would be strung from the brim of the hat so that when you swivel your head the swinging corks keep those pesky blowflies off you. Believed to have been worn by jackaroos or swagmen (I don’t know either), the genius was in the fact that cork’s lack of density mean that their weight doesn’t drag the brim down with them.
Bahrain/UAE/Saudi Arabia – Keffiyeh
If you’ve ever watched one of the Middle Eastern races, you cannot miss these being sported by many members of the crowd. What began as a practical piece of headwear and scarf has become popular around the world, and sometimes associated with Palestinian solidarity due to its wearing by notable Palestinian figures.
China/Japan/Vietnam – Conical Hat
Is it even a paddy field if you don’t see the farmers wearing these? Not only offering excellent sun and rain protection, but they can also be dipped in water to be used for evaporative cooling. Also well known to be a symbol of Buddhism, especially in Japan.
Azerbaijan – Papaq
A sign of prestige and dignity, these would never be taken off in public, to the point where doing so was considered shameful. If you really wanted to rile someone up, you could knock off their papaq.
Spain – Barretina
Very popular in Catalonia, the region containing Barcelona and our not-so-beloved Spanish GP, this floppy number is a symbol of identity. They became less popular in the 19th century but had a brief resurgence when Salvador Dali started wearing one. In the 2010 world cup final, a pitch invader tried to put one onto the trophy.
Monaco – Monegasque Military Helmet
I really struggled with this one. I think one of the best bets is to go with the white (in summer) or blue (in winter) custodian hat worn by the Prince’s Company. Brits will have seen a darker version of this hat worn by the bobbies on the beat (Police on street patrol).
Canada – Mounties Hat
As much as I think it would be cool to see a First Nations headdress on the podium, I understand that given the sacrality of these to their culture it is probably not appropriate to do so. So instead, I’d go for the hat worn by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police – the ‘Mounties.’ Originally formed in 1873 to protect First Nations territory from whisky bootleggers, they’re still functional today and are so iconic that at one point Disney were doing their brand management.
France – Beret
What else? We all have the same image – a Frenchman, riding a bike, with a curly moustache, stripy shirt, string of onions and of course a beret. Potentially dating back to the bronze age, the beret has always been popular in France and its fashion has expanded around the world thanks to colonisation and later social media. They’re also very popular with militaries and revolutionaries alike, most notably Che Guevara.
Austria/Germany – Tyrolean Hat/Jägerhut
While I have seen many a cheap knock-off version of these hats during our British attempts at Oktoberfest, they truly originate from the Tyrol region in the Alps, which is now spread across Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. After Edward VIII of the UK abdicated in 1936 he frequently stayed in Styria and wore this type of hat, making it associated with the region. This makes it even more relevant as Styria is where the Red Bull Ring is!
Great Britain – Bowler Hat
Created by the Londoners Thomas and William Bowler in 1849, it has been associated with the working, middle and upper classes across its lifetime, and also finding popularity on the American frontier – more so than the cowboy hat or the sombrero. Worn by countless real and fictional characters, it remains an icon of 19th and 20th century Britain.
Hungary – Shako
These are modified versions of the traditional stovepipe or top hats which were worn by Hungarian shepherds in the 18th century, before being adopted by the military and becoming a symbol of the Hungarian Hussars. Despite only really being used functionally for about 70 years, the style spread to armies across the world and can still be seen on parade today.
Belgium – Gilles Plumed Headdress
Now this is something I’d like to see. These aren’t really related to Spa-Franchorchamps, but they’re too impressive to pass up on. The Gilles are costumed participants of the Carnival of Binche celebrated every Shrove Tuesday. During the morning of the carnival they wear masks, but upon reaching the town hall they take these off, and some don these epic ostrich-feathered hats and throw blood oranges at the crowd - something I’d also like to see on the podium.
Italy – Milanese Fashion
Another tough one. Since Italy is such a young country, I struggled to find much in the way of traditional clothing. However, I have another idea. Monza is really close to Milan, whose fashion week is one of the most recognised in the world. Why not collaborate with some of the most famous designers to have a one-off hat reflecting each year’s fashion trends? As well as uniqueness, it’s a sponsorship opportunity, and if there’s one thing F1 loves more than racing…
Singapore – Slouch Hat
I don’t want to group Singapore with the three other countries using the conical hat, despite its presence in the region. The Slouch hat is worn by Singapore’s Gurkha Contingent and has become a marker from which they can be identified. Gurkha regiments are used in many countries and are known to be some of the most fearsome soldiers, with only 200 of the 20,000 applicants (1%) making it into Singapore’s GC yearly.
Russia – Ushanka
Even if these hadn’t already been used at Grands Prix before, it would still be my choice. The true Ushanka is inspired by Norwegian arctic explorer’s hats, and from Cossack interaction of central Asian peoples. After losing the Winter War to Finns whose hats were better at keeping their heads warm (this was not the only reason), the Red Army ditched their old budenovka hats and Ushankas became standard-issue, thus the relationship with wearing one and all of your friends calling you ‘comrade’ was born. Perhaps the most exciting thing about the Russian GP would be seeing these make a comeback.
Mexico/Brazil – Sombrero
Simply Spanish for ‘hat,’ this is another one that’s seen the podium before. This hat is even wider than the Spanish version brought over by colonials, to give better sun protection from the more intense central American heat.
United States – Cowboy Hat
John Batterson Stetson is credited with the original design of hat we all know and love today. Depending on your age, you may associate this hat with John Wayne or Woody, but travel to a Southern or Western ranch and you’ll likely see them being worn. The Stetson got a free PR boost when, in 1912, the USS Maine was raised after being sunk for fourteen years and a seemingly undamaged Stetson was found in the wreckage.
Bonus Races
Portugal – Portuguese Sombrero
Typical traditional Portuguese clothing, this sombrero is only similar to its South American cousins in name. It would have a flat brim and top and is worn as part of traditional dress.
Turkey – Fez
Written into the history books by the Ottoman Empire, this hat became popular because of its practicality – it was easier to pray (with your head to the ground, as is done in Islam), wearing this than with a turban, bonnet or Keffiyeh. Ironically, in the late 18th century, political rival Austria held a near monopoly on the production of the Fez and they became less popular following a boycott of Austrian goods due to increasing tension between the nations.
Netherlands – Flat Cap or Wide Brimmed
There doesn’t seem to be a consensus on this at all, it was one or the other. As such, I don’t have much to write here. If this idea were too boring, I’m sure we could change them for some sort of Windmill hat.
India – Turban
Common in Sikhism and some sects of Islam, the origins of this headwear are so old it’s unknown. There are many regional variants, all with their own name, each coming in different colours and sizes.
Malaysia – Tengkolok
Dating back to 1400, this hat was born of a need for Malaccan Malays to be expected to cover their head and present themselves neatly when seeking audience with the Sultan. Over time it became popular to decorate them in accordance with your wealth.
Thank you everyone for reading! Hope you made it this far. Now, what do I do with all this free time?

[$SE] Multi-year Emerging Market Growth - This is the Way

Alright, listen up my fellow autists. I was drafting this DD up to put in my private archives, but this place isn't autistic enough anymore. Apes are too alpha with their diamond hands and I'm here to bring you some plays to put tendies on the table like good ol days.
I'm here to talk about what's for some reason an under followed stock. $SE
BUT WHAT IS $SE?!?!?!? Sea Limited is a leading E-commerce, digital payments, and mobile gaming company based in Southeast Asia NOT COMMIE TOWN CHINA (disclaimer I'm long $BABA). They operate through those three segments and benefit from synergies between them.
Let's start with E-commerce It's the middle of a fucking GLOBAL PANDEMIC. I bet your house is filled with cardboard boxes up to the ceilings. At least mine is. I'm buying a lot of shit online, because I'm working from home, trading in my PJs and making FAT STACKS off $SE. While I don't live in Malaysia, I use Amazon. It's the future. Look at the entire brick and mortar retail industry over the last 5-10 years cough GME cough. Things aren't so hot. You can get things cheaper and exactly what you want.
I feel this part of the thesis is pretty self explanatory. Do you believe people will continue to buy things online over the next 10 years?
But how are they doing? FUCKING GREAT. I have access to some proprietary app data I'm too lazy to smuggle off my work PC, but let me say. Things are UP. Downloads, DAU, session length, all the metrics. BOOMIN. Don't believe me? Here's how they've been doing vs. local competitors ($BABA owned Lazada) and a private company rumored to be involved with a one of those special purpose tickers (Tokopedia).
$SE mainly competes in its e-commerce segment in the Southeast Asia market. It's key countries are Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Brazil. As shown here using google trends, we see that Shopee is now claiming the top spot in relative search interest in many of these markets.
Gaining Share/Interest over competitors in recent years

Current Growth Rates
Digital Payments. $SE also has a digital wallet app. This is Southeast Asia. They don't have JP Morgan pulling from everyone's pockets. Everyone's got a phone and uses this in tandem to purchase things online. Did I mention that $SE has both B2C and C2C shopping apps? Want to transact with local business? Process payments and handle your small business checking through $SE. Makes it easy to track and receive payments from customers. Fucking great. Basically lets the company pull a sliver from every transaction going on in their markets.
Not a compelling YOLO worthy investment on it's own but bolsters the package, just like how stuffing a sock bolsters my cock.
Mobile Gaming. What's that? Boom Beach is for dads? I know. Doesn't matter, the rest of the world loves this shit. Their mobile gaming division is called Garena and their biggest game is a battle royale called Free Fire:
Garena is a leading esports organizer. It hosts esports events around the world that range from grassroots local tournaments to some of the most viewed professional esports competitions globally. Garena’s largest global esports tournament of 2019, the Free Fire World Series, achieved over 130 million cumulative online views.
Somehow, this shit fills stadiums.
And growth don't stop.
Why it's interesting? Recent IPO (relatively). This thing is less than 2 years public and absolutely on a tear. Market cap of $140 billion is especially compelling. Consider that the e-commerce growth is the fastest in the world in their markets..
It's a company you value on the top-line. So in a region with 8-10% GDP growth, and 10%+ ecommerce growth it's easy to make a case for 20% top-line growth on right there. Now lets consider an increasing shift in spend from brick and mortar to digital of 10% (you make 1 out of 10 purchases online more than you did last year) and gaining market share. 50% growth isn't hard to achieve on this piece of the business alone. And that's ANNUAL.
How to play it? LEAPS. Shares are for apes and frees up cash for FDs on pull backs (if it drops more than 10% hammer the ask on all the 20% OTM 60 DTE you can get).
TL;DR? EDUCATE YOURSELF AND READ IT. THERE WILL BE MORE TO COME.

THE NEXT BIG PLAY - UP Fintech Holding (TICKER: TIGR)

Fellow autists,

I present to you, UP Fintech Holding: TICKER: TIGR

Let's get this out of the way now... TL;DR: TIGR 💎🙌🏻👨‍🚀🚀🚀🚀📈📈📈💰💰💰

Positions:

https://preview.redd.it/v4qr7lakuzf61.jpg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=928bffc2d08b1e47b3cd04eb3bb9cd2612f88951

Obligatory: I am not a financial advisor. I am retarded and I know nothing. Do not listen to me.

Personally, I invest first and then do my DD after. Why you ask? Well, I am retarded. But more importantly, this two step approach allows me to enjoy two of my favorite things: (1) panic buying like a true WSB autist, and (2) justifying my YOLO after the fact with actual logic, reason, and of course, our favorite—numbers! I call it The Way of the Autist.

So, now that you have already leveraged everything and dumped your life savings into TIGR after seeing the TL;DR/Positions above, you have completed the first step of The Way of the Autist.

To be clear, if after seeing the TL;DR/Positions above, you thought to yourself, "if Lieutenant u/Brassmonkeynutzz made money, I can too because APES TOGETHER STRONG 🦍🍌💎🤚🏻🤪" then you belong here. If you immediately panic bought before you read the actual text of this post, you belong here. If you cannot read this at all, you belong here. However, if you are still reading and have not invested in TIGR yet, it is likely too late, and you should consider an ETF instead.

ANYWAYS, now that you are jacked to the tits on TIGR calls and shares, let's talk about why you are so glad you decided to invest first and ask questions later.

TIGR doubled its revenues for three consecutive quarters in 2020, the fastest growth rate among the U.S. and Hong Kong stock brokers. 2. RECENT PARTNERSHIP WITH AURORA MOBILE LIMITED WILL GENERATE FURTHER GROWTH:

On January 5, 2021, Aurora Mobile, a leading mobile developer service provider in China, "announced that it has entered into a partnership agreement with UP Fintech Holding Limited (NASDAQ: TIGR)." Source 1.

A. AURORA WILL EXPAND USER BASE AND ENGAGEMENT:

Aurora's industry-leading artificial intelligence (“AI”) and machine learning capabilities will provide push notification services and other capabilities to help Tiger Brokers improve user engagement and expand its use base. Source 1.

B. AURORA'S DETAILED ANALYTICS WILL FURTHER EXPAND USER ENGAGEMENT AND GROWTH:

Aurora's services and "machine learning-based data processing and analysis capabilities [will] help Tiger Brokers gain comprehensive insights on its user needs, provide targeted and matched personalized experience to cater to user’s interest, and improve user stickiness and engagement, as a result, to conduct dynamic smart operations." Source 1.

This partnership could send TIGR interstellar. 👨‍🚀🚀🚀🚀

3. RECENT INSTITUTIONAL BACKING FROM A NOTORIOUS SHORT SELLER:

On February 2, 2021, Kerrisdale Capital who has a reputation for making "successful bets against Chinese internet companies, came out with a long position in" TIGR, calling it "The Robinhood of China." Source 5 (great article for any of you that actually know how to read).

Now, I know what you are thinking: FUCK ROBINHOOD. I absolutely agree. The mass fraud that they perpetrated on the retail market with GME, AMC, BB, etc. is an absolute travesty. But the point here is, TIGR has insane revenue and user growth and is continuously expanding its business according to available data and information. It's platform is user friendly and is attracting a lot of attention from retail investors, institutional investors, and start up companies seeking to go public via an IPO.

CONCLUSION:

TIGR is the next big trading platform that global, individual and institutional investors are showing an increasing interest in. It has the potential to continue its growth trajectory based purely on its impressive numbers, which speak for themselves.

Also, I believe TIGR will continue to gain international interest in light of the recent media spotlight on retail trading. Interestingly, the "government mobility restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic have helped fuel a surge in online trading . . . ." Source 5. And even though you might not expect it, "Robinhood's app recorded more downloads than any other U.S. trading app last week despite concerns about its restrictions on transactions." Source 5.

SUMMARY: Getting into TIGR now is like getting in on sunlight before there was fucking sunlight.

TL;DR AGAIN: TIGR 💎🙌🏻👨‍🚀🚀🚀🚀📈📈📈💰💰💰

Sincerely,

Lieutenant u/Brassmonkeynutzz

One thing worth discussing with recent Covid-19 community cases: Working while sick

So, I bet all of y'all have seen the news of recent Covid-19 cases, namely how it spread through workers that attended work despite having a few symptoms of Covid-19 without realizing they carried the disease, leading ministers to urge Singaporeans to not hesitate seeing a doctor if they fall ill.
However, this raises another issue, one that I don't see addressed a lot: Why DO we hesitate to see a doctor when we fall sick?
Think about it. How many of you have showed up to school/work with a headache or fever before 2020? How many NSF's // Uniformed personnel here are afraid of being labelled a 'chao keng' when we need to visit the doctoget an MC?
It definitely feels like a thing in Singapore where falling sick is a sign of weakness, or at the very least there's a stigma behind it. If we fall sick, be it through our own fault or not, we're afraid to fall behind. I've attended school with mild symptoms a few times in the past because, academics-wise, I'd miss out on a key lesson or need to hand in a key assignment, and though I'm not in the working world just yet, I suppose it's the same situation with deadlines, attendance requirements, and pay situations in working environments.
This entire culture, I feel, is systemic in Singapore. It goes against what we've prioritized in our national narrative, which is expanding our capacity to work to increase productivity. This results in inequal effects down the social/working/military hierarchy, where those that fall sick often are seen as disposable and replaceable because they are incapable of working to a certain standard expected of them. Through no fault of their own, they're at greater risk of being replaced/ignored/left behind because they fall sick, and falling sick also carries a stigma of being weak and slackish in a world where we're expected to be strong and hardworking to succeed.
So it's a new age, right? It's been a year, we should have changed and started reporting sick all the time, right? Well...no. In this crisis, we've stuck to old systems of hardworking and definitions of success. And just imagine if you step into the police para-vetenarian's shoes, the one that 'started' all these cases. Imagine being under pressure to perform your job with expectations from those higher up in the hierarchy. Imagine the surrounding stigma for falling sick, and the key work you'd miss if you take an MC. And that's just one person in this web. Imagine the pressures other people are facing. And some have resorted to labelling their cases and pointing blame, which is sad to see without understanding where they are coming from.
It's been a norm for a long time, to work while sick. To keep to deadlines, to avoid work piling on after we're better, to avoid getting fired/getting a bad grade/mocked by peers and higher-ups. To expect us to get back to norms of work and life means this norm also creeps back in. We can't expect to recover without questioning the norms that introduce danger in our lives, and addressing the systems that drive these norms.
So, let's not point fingers at those that have worked while sick, and thus inadvertently reintroduced Covid-19 to Singapore. Instead, let's listen to them, and question why these situations even exist, and what we can do to change that. Otherwise, I doubt we'd ever get back to normal.
And if we do, a normal where we're expected (or even celebrated) to work while sick should not be the normal we aspire for our future.
TL;DR: It's been normal for a long time to work while sick, and it's not our fault. Don't blame current Covid spreaders, and question why it's normal in the first place.

Objectively the worst Nation in-game - Electric Boogaloo #N4

Objectively the worst Nation in-game - Electric Boogaloo #N4
G'day mate, Today we'll be Goin' down under; Join me as I throw some Shrimp on the barbie!
Sorry to all Aussies for that horrible introduction. But today we will be looking at none other, than the worst deck in-game.
When I say objectively. I do mean it. Australia has benefits. Don't get me wrong. Their infantry tends to be quite good and one of the few that can hold up against Red Inf. But Australia is truly lacking in terms of units and abilities.
Let's start with the Inf and the benefits and downsides. Aussies suffer tremendously from the lack of any Autocannon or any type of transport with the ability to take out transports. Technically the .50 Cals can take some out. But for the most part, you will be sorely relying on the Inf. They also lack any good Heli transports. But this is where the downsides stop.
Infantry
  • Assault Pioniers - This is what you expect from the typical Napalm Inf. Nothing great. Only 15pts in a 10-man squad. But the thing to note is the transport option comes with the Mini-gun. Good at taking out any fly over Helicopters and able to suppress any Infantry. With the added benefit of it being slow enough that your Inf is able to keep up with it roughly. Though would recommend sending Inf in first then the transport. Just so the enemy Inf will focus with their MGs. While your Transport comes in to wipe the floor.
  • Commandos - They aren't bad. But with a Commandos '90 version available for the same price. It comes down to whether or not you want that accurate rifle. The MG is worse. While the rocket is nothing more than the Carl Gustav M2.
  • Commandos '90 - Getting the F88 Austeyr, better known as the AUG ( Not really but the only difference is a 1:7 Twist barrel then a 1:9 Twist barrel) Is objectively the best rifle on any Shock Inf in at least on Bluefor. Compared to the US Marines '90. It has better ROF & Accuracy. Paratroopers '90s also lose and so forth. Having the ROF of an SMG but the accuracy of an M16. It also gains the Minimi. The best MG of the game. Still retains the Carl Gustav M2 though.
  • Diggers - Is what'd you'd expect from your standard line Inf. Identical stats to the Fusiliers save for a bit better ROF on the MG. The benefit is you get the LAW. I used to despise the LAW just for that range. But this thing can truly shred transports of any kind.
  • Diggers '90 - Are great cause of the upgraded LAW. Meaning it can rip and tear even better. Also beating out the Rifleman '90 due to having the Minimi. While the rifle stats are the same. Rifleman '90 also comes with an AT-4. The final version of the LAW. So the Rifleman '90 beat them there.
  • Milan - No, don't use this. I only can agree on having this in your deck if you're just trying to max out your inf tab. 10pts only. But that 17AP and 40% Accuracy is a no. But hey, at least it's better than the Mitsubishi MAT.
  • SASR - Is surprisingly on par with Delta Force. The only difference being the Carl Gustave M3 compared to the Delta's with the M2. Cost 35pts, but is significantly outclassed by Royal Marines '90 and both the Fallshirmjage90. I'm still butthurt how they ruined Delta Force...
  • MRAW - What'd you'd expect from a Fire support unit. Smaw still beats it any day.
  • RBS-70 - A so so Manpad unit. Nothing horrid but not great. The range is nice as compared to theLAAD Stinger C. But that 45% Accuracy is so eh... Also, it's guided so
  • REDEYE - In a weird way, I'd prefer this over the RBS-70. You'd probably think I'm joking, but hear me out. Sure that 3-HE, 30% Accuracy, and 2275mm range makes this look horrid. But It is F&F and if spammed in numbers. Can shoot down even SU-27M's and so on as I can attest to. How cheap they are also helping. Can be great to fill out your lines. A Helicopter flying by and suddenly see's a missile fly out. They're not gonna care. They are immediately gonna turn around and run.
The most notable units for me are defiantly the Commandos '90 and the Assault Pioniers if played right. Can decimate most Red Inf.
Support
  • M108 - You know, these aren't that bad? I'm serious too. As long as you can muster 200pts. These aren't bad. It's a 50pts Artillery unit. Only 105mm giving it only 5-HE. The Accuracy is awful also. But if you use these close to the frontlines. Within the 1000-5000m range. Then it's not that bad in terms of accuracy. The volume of shells is also great just for destroying any towns and forests you need. I personally think that 50pts 155mm Artillery is better. Even if a longer aim time. But it's still not bad. I find it gives better fire support than the next unit.
  • M125A1 - I don't remember ever actually using this. It's nothing more than an 81mm Motar on the chassis of the M113A1. I have never been a fan of 81mm Motors and tend to like 100mm+.
  • Tracked Rapier - It is almost comedic how often I see people use this and think it's radar. So many flanks have been lost due to some Anzac teammate not realizing this and an Akula kills a Super. But the unit itself? It's shit. The only reason it's used is because of how lacking Anzac AA truly is. I am not kidding. It only has 35km/h speed off-road. Not great Autonomy. It's just not great. The reload of it also tends to be annoyingly long from what I remember. But if you want None-radar Heli AA. Then congrats.
  • Tracked Rapier FSA - The only Anti-Plane AA this nation has. At least here, It actually has a good range for what it's meant for unlike the Anti-Heli version of this unit. It has a 3850mm range with an accuracy of 60%. But it is radar so there is that. Not bad.
You know, concerning the Rapiers. I once got Firestarter (rip) to rage over this unit? I sent him a deck that started his Bad Deck series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjbdWe1pqHo&list=PLg-omYUS4wBqq9NXHHfZeg8pl2HiSzIml&index=17 Just meant to be bad on purpose. The most notable unit for me has got to be the Tracked Rapier FSA. Just for the fact that the weapons themselves aren't bad. But the platform is lacking. Not as bad for the FSA as it's meant to sit in the back a bit. Unlike the Anti-Helo version.
The support tab tends to really struggle here. The AA role doesn't have anything of much value. The fire-support is lacking. It feels more of an afterthought. Like the Devs remembered last minute that Anzac needs a support tab.
TANKS
  • Centurion MK5/1 - You know, I find a lot of cheap tanks to not be that bad. This one isn't that bad either. 9 frontal armor and 5-side. Gun range 1925mm and 40% accuracy. 8m with 8AP and 3 HE. All that for 25pts. But issue with these low tier vehicles. Is that there tends to be a better one around the same price. Meaning that you are penalizing yourself for no real reason. Such as this one as I will describe
  • Leopard AS1 - Compared to the German Leopard 1A2. It's almost identical safe for an extra 2 frontal armor. But as mentioned with the Centurion. It's just better. For 5pts more you get a better gun. A decent and accurate MG. Speed is almost X2 faster. Also has Medium optics. Only for 30pts. You lose 1 armor. That's it. Just don't go expecting to be leading any assaults with these.
  • Leopard AS1+ - I'd say is actually better pts wise compared to the Leopard 1A5. You get the same exact gun. But lose 2 frontal armor. But for 10pts less. More economically viable. As I feel most people don't use the Leopard 1A series to tank shots but to destroy things with ease.
  • M41A1 - I feel when people think of bad units. That this is what comes to mind. No armor. Well, 2 frontal. Bad gun with a range of only 1750mm, and only 8 AP. With one of if not the worst Autonomy in the game. But really though. 10pts. It's not that bad I'd say. In practice, it should do good in numbers. But the issue is getting it to the position. It's fast at 70km/h. But you are likely to run out of fuel beforehand. The gun has decent accuracy at 40%. Also, 8m reload. So it should technically be able to be good fire support or anti-transport. But it's hard to find a spot for it.
  • Scorpion Light Tank - I think wins the award for the longest name in the entire game. But it's eh. On par with the Centurion MK5/1 for sure. You don't have anywhere near the armor of the Centurion. But you get a much better gun for 5pts less. It's also a speedy boi at 70km/h. The gun is unlikely to hit at long range. It also has only 10 AP. But good medium optics. It floats!
  • Scorpion 90 - The only tank in-game to have a '90's version. But I'd actually say this is the best tank that Anzac actually has. Not Super but not bad. Good Accuracy at 55%, 13 AP, and 3 HE. With Medium optics again and same speed as previously. But for 30pts. It also floats!
Another big weakness of the nation is just the lack of any proper AT. Having to rely on the vehicle tab for some flimsy AT. Decent fire support and the Scorpion 90 is defiantly the most unique unit. It's able to go on recon missions the long way around with that super high autonomy and speed. But it's just so eh tank tab wise.
RECON
  • AS.350 - A recon heli with nothing really else to say besides its overpriced nature. 55pts for a naked heli. Has very good optics. But no weaponry. To give context. The US has a 50pts OH-58C Kiowa. Same optics and while not great, a Mini-gun. 2 fewer hit points though. Then the French have the Alouette III for only 40pts but the same optics. Just further proof that the pricing of units is all over the place
  • Aslav-S - It's a 55pts Exceptional recon vehicle, what'd you expect? Not even an autocannon but I bet you can do a lot of damage with that .50 cal! Maybe the enemies will be too scared by those optics of yours that they won't get close!
  • BELL 206 - Same as the OH-58C Kiowa except for this time it has a picture of a Kangaroo on it!
  • Ferret mk.2 - Do you see a Ferret? I don't. One of the units I enjoy the most in this deck, just for the troll value. 10pts = Quad stack. At 95km/h. Rush into a town or forest where some enemy inf is, then retreat and watch them be able to not do anything against your suppressive power. But other than that this is a pretty bad unit.
  • M113A1 MRV - What the Sanderwagen III should've been. Except on wheels.
  • Aslav-25 - You can try applying the same tactic as the Ferret mk.2. But this time it's gonna cost you. But it's a bit fast. Oh also has an Autocannon and can float!
  • Norforce - Nothing special. Just your average 5-man recon team for 15pts and has the law.
  • NZSAS - Exactly the same unit as the SASR, except this one has the LAW, making it even better. Plus has very good optics and is 10pts cheaper. Again, showing that Eugen needed to restructure the value of things in this game.
  • Rover - Like the Mitsubishi MAT. As in it's a jeep and there is one dude, except you don't get any stereo speakers attached and has very good optics so... Good
  • LRPV Rover - It's just a Mitsubishi MAT, with no speakers, some guns, and exceptional optics. But it has two machine guns! EAT YOUR HEART OUT ASLAV-S! Again only one man to operate both optics now and two machine guns
  • LRPV Perentine - Mitsubishi MAT but with three guys!!!! We did it, guys! Now he's not alone!! Oh yeah, exceptional optics and a grenade launcher. Eh.
VEHICLES
  • Aslav-25 FSV - Literally no reason to use this over the recon Aslave-25. Same exact unit for the same price. Except it has poor optics instead of the good ones.
  • Aslav-25 TOW-2 - One of Anzac's only AT vehicles. The standard 25mm but also a TOW-2. Only X4 of them so that is disappointing. But it really sucks that you need to rely on an ATGM to have any chance of doing anything.
  • Ferret Entac - I know this might be surprising to some people. But this is indeed not a Ferret. But in fact, a vehicle. Most people were under the impression that'd this would be the worst unit in the game before the Mistubishi MAT post came out. But I don't think it's as bad as some say. Don't get me wrong. This is a bad unit. But for only 15pts, you get an ATGM that has 20AP. Good luck hitting anything with that at only 2100mm and only 35% accuracy. It is a speedy boi and high autonomy. At only 15pts. Maybe someone could get this to work for them. I've tried. But struggle.
  • Vickers mk.11 - Had to come back and write this one as I almost forgot about it. This is what you will be using as your main AT gun. Many use this to do rushes. I find it a bit annoying this is in the vehicle tab. It's like my brain is so used to never using this tab. That I forget about it in-game. So I rarely use these sides from the start of a match.
  • Jeep M40 - Why use this?
  • Rover Wombat - When you could use this? Same price. But better everywhere. 1925mm range compared to the 1750mm range. 14 AP compared to the Jeep's 12 AP. Is also 25kh/m faster than the Jeep
  • Rover Milan - If I think the 10pts ATGM Milan 1 inf squad is bad. Then there is no way I am gonna think that a 20pts Milan 1 Jeep is any better. The only difference is that you are just that much easier to kill
  • M113A1 FSV - Funnily enough, despite this having the same gun as the Sanderwagen III. It's somehow better. It has an impressive %5 accuracy on the move. I know, but wait! There's more. It has a .50 cal!!! Plus it floats! Honestly, if this was available as an Inf transport. Then this might not have been so bad.
  • M113A1 Milan - Technically, this is better than the Rover Milan. Cause it's a 10 point HP unit and 1 armor. Also, has a .50 cal. Plus it floats!
Vehicles are the main lifeline of anti-anything with armor. Most notable is defiantly the Vickers mk.11. It's also fun to use. But just so eh with everything else.
Helicopters
  • Bushmaster - The only helicopter that Anzac has. But isn't so bad. Looking at it at face value might make you think that this is a crappy Vietnam ere helicopter meant for Inf support. But you'd be wrong. The 14-rockets this baby has. Well, they're all HEAT... So yeah, no matter the object. As long as it's a HEAT round being fired. Then you will take off one Hit point for every hit. With a unique 40% accuracy. This thing is deadly. I can and have killed BU's, Chally 2's, and Vihors with this thing. There are two things I dislike or want more from this Heli. Is the guns to have been 20mm like on the Cobra or just Grenade launchers, alternatively just have the range be a bit longer. The range on the missiles is the other thing. It's just in the right range to be too short to be used that great without being shot down. If it had 2275mm like most rockets then this would be so much better.
Out of this wide variety of vehicles to pick from. I'd defiantly say Bushmaster. I almost picked Bushmaster, but at last, Bushmaster won out. It's just so good at being Bushmaster. But so is Bushmaster you ask? Well, that is true that Bushmaster is Bushmaster. I'd rather have Bushmaster for that Bushmaster ability. Might be subjective and a bit controversial. But as soon as you accept Bushmaster, the soon we can Bushmaster.
Airplanes
  • A-4k Skyhawk - Aussies have a weird naming sense. This isn't a hawk, yet they call it one. This is obviously a plane. But does have a Kiwi bird on it. So the real name should be A-4K SkyKiwi. But the plane itself is nothing offensive. It's just a cheap 85pts ATGM plane with two F&F missiles that are fairly inaccurate at only 40%
  • A-4K Kahu - No, this isn't a Kahu. There is no hawk. Now if they did have a Hawk for an airplane, well, that might just be pretty cool. Only 77km/h and only able to peck at enemy Inf. But the plane itself is just a better version of the previous one. Bigger range and more accurate with 30AP.
  • BAC Strikemaster - Eh, just save your pts. Only 50pts only sure. But the speed and no ECM mean you are likely to die before even reaching the attack objective. Two napalm bombs also aren't worth it.
  • MB-339CB - Better worth your buck. Ony 90pts, a bit faster than the BAC. But you also get 4X more Napalm bombs. I just hope you can live without that Machine gun on the BAC
  • F-111C - Used to be really good. But got nerfed. I believe this was one of the most expensive planes in the game at 180pts ( Maybe 160pts) But it used to carry 8X 1000kg Bombs. The only issue was the drop pattern of the plane. Instead of spreading itself out. The bombs would fly more in a straight line instead. The plane would also stay on target longer and usually fly over AA. As it'd take longer to drop. Nowadays, it's alright. Lost its charm. I find it rarely survives. The D-Eagle also has the same loadout but better for 20pts more. The bombs still spread out like crazy. I've had situations where my bombs go around the inf squad I'm bombing instead and the inf squad only loses like 2 people.
  • F-4E Phantom II - Boo! The best ASF you're going to get at only 90pts. SA Long-range Sparrow missiles only. Not even having the benefit of the extra range that good SA planes get. Only have 7000m range. Plus an accuracy of only 40%. Same with the short-range missiles. Only getting 30% accuracy. Really though, I'm just wondering what happened to the first ghost?
  • F/A-18A Hornet - Now they're just doing this on purpose. This is not a Hornet but, indeed. A plane. I know shocking? The plane? Overpriced as hell. The Netherlands F-16A Block 5 is the same save for the 10% worse ECM and X2 fewer missiles. But only 120pts compared to the Hornets 125pts. Even worse is the German Tornado IDS has the same loadout if not a worse gun and X2 fewer Short-range missiles. But also has Exceptional air optics. But is only 115pts instead of the Hornet's 125pts. Even worse! Is the British, The Harrier GR.5 has 250km/h less speed and 2X fewer missiles. But for 100pts you get the same exact loadout but with 40% ECM. Further, proof of the weird point system in this game.
  • Mirage IIIO{A} - Is actually a really good and cheap bomber. The speed and bomb load make it worth it for only 65pts. 6X 227kg MK 82 bombs and X2 Aim-9B short-range missiles. Plus the 900km/h speed makes it good. But you get all of this for only 65pts. While you spend 50pts on the BAC and get some crappy Napalm, slow plane and likely to die.
  • Mirage IIIO{F} - The only mirage here is the enemies mistaking your airforce as an actual threat. You only use this when your Phantom II ( Boo!) runs out.
Planes are save for Inf, Australians next strong suit. But compared to other nations eh, it gets murky. Australia relies heavily on bombing. Not a single SEAD craft and your ASF leaves a lot to be desired. The most unique plane is the F-111C. But since they nerfed it. That uniqueness is a lot less interesting #NotmyF-111C
Naval
  • Fremantle - Considered by most of the community to be the worst naval ship in the game. There is nothing good or special about this. You don't even need a ship that is small. It's not like you're sending a CV jeep into a forest. This can also be targeted by Anti-ship missiles. Yeah, you'd probably expect it to be immune with how small and none-radarish this is right? No, It's just bad. The only thing worth mentioning is that this has arty on it. Something all naval ships should've had to make them interesting. Most modern-day ships have bombardment capabilities. But not in Wargame. But it's not even the main gun. Just some crappy 81mm mortar that can barely reach anything. If you ever get into then it's useless as it won't fire without your command. Even then, I'm pretty sure it stops the main gun from firing. There is also no CWIS. Also, it only has good naval optics. So expect invisible ships from 3000m+ away to be firing at you if you haven't died from their Anti-ship missiles.
  • F111G - The thing that annoys me the most about this plane is that there is no dash between the F and the 111G. Why?! The F-111C gets it but not it? What makes it so special? But the plane isn't bad. Best Anti-ship plane most likely. Just a bit spendy. For 10pts less you get the A-6E Tram Intruder. But the F111G is faster but has 10% less ECM. So it's a decision of what you want. A fast plane or a survivable plane.
Probably weren't expecting the navy huh? Yeah, Australia at least can hold the title of having at least one unit in each tab... Congrats. The most unique unit? Defiantly the Fremantle. Not that it's good. But it is unique as the only capital ship to have a Motor. It's also unique in being the only capital ship to be able to die by being looked at funny.
Australia just struggles to do most things that any other nation can. I went and compared them. All Scandinavian countries individually have one-ups. Norway has Nasams and decent armor. Denmark has the Ottomatic ( Best Anti-everything in-game) Good inf and decent armor. Sweden is OP compared to Anzac. Armor on par with most top tier nations. The most OP artillery in the game. Good, but not great Gun tanks. Plus, Scandinavian nations are the only other country that has Infantry that is good at fighting Redford. So Aussie's advantage is diminished.
Hell, even NORTH KOREA. Is a superpower in comparison? You know, the Hermit nation? The nation that struggles to feed its own country and commonly uses outdated technology? Yeah, that. It is somehow more powerful than Australia. Infantry is one of the strongest points of Red Dragons; So there goes that advantage for Australia. Transports are varied. With even AA transports. Tanks that are somehow on par with the big three ( US, UK, SU) AA is more varied also with super long-range AA. Gun tanks. Plus the B-5.
Australia struggles with its transports. Everything is either wheeled with a .50 or tracked and stuck in Vietnam. The support that struggles to do its one job, support. Tanks that are sub-par. Recon that is alright. Vehicles that are mostly bad save for two. A Demi-god tier Helicopter. Then a mixed bag airforce. Where it's one job of bombing, usually doesn't happen as there is no SEAD or good ASF.
There are also some units that might've been interesting to see in Australia. Such as the LARC-V. I amphibious transport used in Vietnam. I believe it is unarmed. But really. A cheap wheeled transportable to go through rivers would've been great for Anzac. Especially at 5pts. Cause at least then the Inf cost can be subsided a bit.
The M3 Lee was still in service a bit after WW2. Sure, it may not have been good. But if you could get some type of fire support vehicle, then that'd be great. The Lee had a 75mm I believe. A short barrel at that meant specifically for fire support. So Australia has its own cheap 15-20pts unit with 4-5 HE and the other guns on the LEE, that'd be great.
Then there is the Yeramba. Despite just having a funny name I'd love to of seen it in-game. It pretty much is an M3 Lee turned into an artillery piece. It wouldn't be that bad. Make it a 25-35pts Artillery. It would be the cheapest artillery in-game. Have decent range and some eh accuracy. But would be great to go along with the Australians strong point. Their Infantry. Fast firing and deadly artillery support is what Australia could use. Not just that M109.
If we look at 2004, we could actually see the Australians get the M1A1 Abrams. This would be great for Australia. They don't need a super-strong tank. But something that can stay alive and push with their Infantry. Would also be quite unique seeing the only other nation with the Abrams.
2004 also saw Australia receive the Tiger Gunship. The same as the French had. Now there is this long history of complications that Australia has had with the Tiger. Such as the Tiger not being adapted to the environment Australia has. Like overseas combat and so on. It's now being replaced by the Apache. But none of the mechanical issues that real-life vehicles have to exist in-game. So this could be great. Even if it was turned into a pure anti-infantry support role. Give it 76 rockets. But increase the range to 2625mm. Even better. Give it the full fire mode that rocket planes have. Just like how the Canadian CF-104 Starfighter has the best range for its rockets out of all rocket planes. It also fires full salvo's. This could be great. The Tiger fires one of its 36 rocket containers all at once. A bit of a reload. Then able to fire its other. It could be great at Anti-inf. But not super OP by not being able to stay on target long. Just one fire has the helicopter already half-way through its main armament.
I know that nothing like this will happen now. I'm pretty sure Eugen has long abandoned this game and is waiting for the player base to finally die. But man, there was stuff they could've done with Australia to not make it so eh.
You could even stretch it. Maybe not a good idea. But Instead of it just being Anzac. Include Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Australia holds a unique relationship with all of them. It wouldn't be out of the question they'd fight together. I mean, it'd of been better if these nations got their own DLC. As there is a lack of Asian nations in this game. But I'd rather get a Vietnam and Taiwan DLC pack instead. Still butthurt we didn't get an Italy nation pack but for some reason got a Finnish & Yugoslavia. Some of the farthest removed nations from Asia.
Now I am done, my left-hand hurts like hell for type all of this in one sitting. It is late. I have been typing for 4 or so hours. Just researching, and typing this. G'day mates

[Thank You] I'm moving! Thanks for all the cards this week, you are amazing! (mystery sender too)

Thank you all for the wonderful cards I received this week!
I'm moving this weekend! Still within the same building which makes it easier :) So I have a new number and a new eircode (zipcode/postcode). Please let me know if you'd like to have it for future exchanges. I will keep the key to my current post box so if something's on the way to me I'll be able to get it for a while yet (I doubt anyone will be moving into my old place for a good few weeks under lockdown).
Between that and getting my new (first!) car yesterday I'm super busy so sorry if I've been quiet :) I'll come back with more offers when I have a home for my supplies in the new place (it's a bigger place so more room for stuff haha)
u/welshfancy x5 - Thank you so much dear for the wonderful deluge of carding love! Thank you for your card sent on New Year's Eve, with envelope within envelope of beautiful mail themed supplies. And THE CUTEST washi tape samples. Thank you so much. And thank you for the Valentine's card. The matching stamp and hand cancellation on 1 Feb was a wonderful touch. I was utterly thrilled to receive it. I love the card so much - I've never had a handmade Valentine's card :) The textures and composition are stellar. I love the little jewels too, they add a welcome sparkle :) I also love the postcard you made, with the 'spread love like confetti' phrase written on it. I'm so sorry to hear you haven't been well. I am thinking of you and hope you feel a bit better soon. I really appreciate you sending me these cards despite how you are feeling! I must give you my new (almost the same) address on my next card - an excuse to write to you from my new place :)
u/atthecodfishball - Thanks for your lovely 'Bloom where you are planted' postcard. I totally agree, it would be perfect for framing :) I'd also love to turn it into a cross stitch design, but I am so behind on all my started projects already haha. I hope the weather is looking up for you! We've had ice and sleet all week so far but none of the promised actual snow! I must remember to give you my new address for our next exchange :)
u/gimmiegnomes - Thanks for the very special Canada post themed Valentine's card! I am definitely feeling the love. I did not know that post themed fact about the cats in Belgium. That's hilarious, did they not realise cats would never do that?! Dogs maaaybe... Happy Valentine's Day!
u/halfwayoutoftown - Thank you for the beautiful postcard of the Peranakan shophouse! The stamps you used are stunning and match the card perfectly! The card was a delight to receive. I was very interested to learn about the Peranakan people being the native people of Singapore and having blue eyes!
u/vickiiiie x 2 - Thanks for the lovely card from Hong Kong and the cute bubble tea one too. You used such awesome stamps, thank you so much. I hope your move went well, congrats on moving across the world during such challenging times. I bet the pace of life on your new island home is quite different from Hong Kong ;) Stay warm, we've got a lot of sleet and ice here in Ireland so it must be cold for you too.
u/anfield456 - Thank you so much for the Coco postcard. That is such an awesome film. It warms my heart. Thanks for telling me about your perfect day in your city - it sounds wonderful and I hope you are able to do those things again very soon.
u/PembrokeLove - OH WOW this card is amazing!!!!! I hope your wife is doing well. She is super talented at colouring in, this card is a delight! It will be going up in my new place :) Thank you both so much.
u/twerptwo x 2 - Thank you so much for the gorgeous, wonderful pandemic themed Valentine's day card. As always you've picked a great poem to go inside. And thank you for the adorable mini pop up flower card in the sweet chick themed envelope. Wishing you a great Valentine's day this weekend!
u/LP-1 - Thank you for the card of Nantes and the wonderfully decorated envelope! I loved the sea creatures! I can't wait to get to the sea again :) It's the most magical place to be! I loved to hear about your love of Ireland. I love France too, I did an Erasmus year in Paris during university and had just the best time travelling around. I hope you'd be able to tour Ireland on your bike one day that sounds like an amazing thing to do! Luckily the country is not too big so get practising. There are also a lot more direct ferries to Ireland since this year :)
u/DPClamavi - Thank you so much dear for the wonderful leprinceaupetitpois postcard. It's AMAZING! Even better in real life. Such warm beautiful colours, I am missing the richness of autumn right now so this cheers me right up. Thank you for the book suggestions. I am moving house right now (in the same building at least) so I'm a bit busy but I will enjoy looking those books up and choosing one or two with a cup of your fantastic smelling myrtille tea :) As always, thank you for the Dublin stamp. It's just amazing. Don't let me forget to send you my new address before we do our next exchange!
u/lucilimon - wow your Christmas postcard has to be a record for slowest mail I've received. 77 days from Spain to Ireland! It arrived just this morning... It was a welcome surprise though as it's such a beautiful card and the stickers and stamp are gorgeous too. And your handwriting is so neat and beautiful. Thank you so much for the card! Those Christmassy treats sound amazing :)
MYSTERY SENDER: I received a Penguin book cover postcard from a mystery sender from Northern Europe postmarked 25 January. They have used a beautiful Orca stamp and shared a fantastic memory of their favourite food in Thailand on the card. Thank you so much for the card and I hope I can find out who you are! I was wondering if it may be u/Intrepid-Researcher? Edit: it's not.

[University] How to sign up for 11 Years of Poverty (Local Med Sch Application Guide)

Shout out to all prospective medical students out there :) I'm J from Four Blind Mice, an online student resource page.
If you have already set your mind on medicine and want to find out more about the application process for NUS YLLSoM, NTU LKCSoM and Duke-NUS, please visit the links below!
  1. Local Med School application process, documents required and personal statement preparation: https://fourblindmicesg.com/sg-medical-school-application-part-2/
  2. Interview Preparation: https://fourblindmicesg.com/sg-medical-school-application-part-3/
Curious about the title? If you are still considering whether or not to pursue medicine, please read on.
Despite the title and subsequent content of this post, don't get me wrong. Medicine is an undeniably fulfilling and exciting career, and I am definitely grateful for the opportunity given to me. As a poly student in a local med school, I just wished someone could have given me a realistic take on medicine as a career before I applied. So rather than discourage you from pursuing Medicine, I only hope that this post can help you reconsider your motivations and make a more informed decision.
Here goes...
Power, Prestige and Pay. These are the 3Ps associated with becoming a doctor that we probably grew up hearing.
Before going any further, it is crucial to understand what you are getting yourself into if you are to study medicine.
Your career as a doctor starts the moment you enter medical school. It involves:
5 years of studying…
a ~$150,0001 degree that comes with periodic/self-inflicted high stress and low study-life balance
1 year as a House Officer…
slogging away 90 hours a week for a ~$3.5K salary and a title of ‘Dr’ which is only provisional
5 years of bond…
working in a government healthcare institution with a high chance of pay stagnation (~$4-5K if you cannot specialise) or minimal pay increment (if you are training to specialise)
Total Years: The titular 11 Years of Poverty2 (Especially after comparing yourself with peers who studied waayyyyy cheaper 4-year degrees and are already peaking in their careers)
In the unlikely event3 that you survived and are lucky4 good enough to specialise by the end of 11 years5, you will be a Resident. And hopefully, within a few more years, you will become a Consultant with the coveted $10K monthly salary that your parents were always talking about6.
In summary, let us review the 3Ps7 of becoming a doctor. Are they really worth all that trouble?
Power:
I guess that depends on how you define power. Having to decide whether a patient should have a catheter stuck into his penis does seem pretty cool.
Prestige:
Sure, only if you have no other way of getting validation8 and being called a doctor gives you a raging hard-on.
Pay:
What pay?
With all that being said, if you still find yourself considering about studying medicine right now…
Then congrats! It means you possess the sole politically correct reason for pursuing a career in medicine, the 4th ‘P’ — Passion*.*
You are probably thinking: Yes, I want to serve the community by healing people and making their lives better. I want to help people!
But why medicine?
Is that the only career capable of helping others? Every job is capable of contributing to the community in their own ways, even accountants. And why not just help by volunteering?
You may then say: Yeah, but I am more interested in helping others through the healthcare aspect.
Then how about being a nurse or any other allied healthcare professional? From physiotherapists to medical technologists and diagnostic radiographers, all of them are involved in healing the sick.
So the question still stands — Why medicine9?
1 If you are considering a scholarship for medical school, I think you will probably find them very limited. Getting into medical school is already hard enough, and now you have to compete with those who got in too? Unless you are a god (in which case you probably wouldn’t even need this guide), the chances of getting it are quite slim. So its best to have a contingency plan for your finances (there are always bursaries and financial aid).
2 Unless your parents are loaded and are willing to pay $600k to break the bond, there are really not many other ways you can escape before the 11 years are up. Go figure.
3 This is not accounting for the possibility of flunking a year in medical school, having to apply for residency multiple times, not being able to specialise, being undecided about your speciality or doing a speciality and then changing your mind halfway. All of which can set you back a few more years.
4 The difficulty of becoming a specialist is not exaggerated. There is now a higher demand for ‘generalist’ doctors as compared to niche specialists such as neurosurgeons or endocrinologist according to MOH. Please read this article,
5 Read this to understand more about the Medical Service Career Path
6 An amusing example of survivorship bias and over-generalisation. It seems that the only doctors that exist in the minds of most non-medical people are the consultants earning $10K a month, who are actually a minority.
7 There is actually another ‘P’ for becoming a doctor: Parents. If this is the reason you have for studying medicine, please have a good talk with your parents about your actual goals rather than waste time and effort on a half-hearted medical school application.
8 If this resonated with you, I bet that you are one of those pricks who have/will have medicine, law and dentistry as the top three choices In their university application.
9 My own reason for studying medicine wasn’t all that noble or better either. Unlike other applicants whose ‘passion’ stemmed from seeing their grandparents die of cancer or some other debilitating health conditions (mine only did after I got in), mine was to study the human body. A stupid reason on hindsight. I sincerely hope that with what I have shared, your reason will be better.
During my interview, I acknowledged that other careers could also help people and that I wanted to study medicine for the content. I was probably only accepted because they needed to fill the quota for polytechnic students.
Taken from part 1 of our med school application guide: https://fourblindmicesg.com/sg-medical-school-application-part-1/

P.S. While the information presented here has not been embellished and is as factual as possible, please still take it with a pinch of salt. Alas, I am only a lowly medical student whose worldview and perspective can be myopic and overly cynical. The views in this post are in no way representative of any institutions or individuals - apart from myself.

A Flexiroam Freehold Flex and a little more DD/Spruik

MY FLEXIROAM FLEX
I posted my original spruik five days ago, when FRX’s share price was 2.8c. It’s share price reached 9.4c today, and closed at 8.6c. I purchased approx. $28,000 worth of FRXO at approx. .5c and sold to freehold today at 3c. A gain of over 400%, and I’ve kept 4,000,000 FRX company options to hold for over twelve months. You can see all the details here. I’m not going to sell any more until I’ve held over twelve months for the 50% CGT discount.
Honestly it happened so quick after my spruik that it feels gangsta. My market value at close.
I’m still very excited about this stock. I estimated 12-15c five days ago, and it's well on it's way there. It rose far faster than I expected and I don’t know what this week is going to hold for it, but I do hope the re-rate is going to continue and solidify.

A LITTLE MORE DD
to keep this post fresh

THE BANKS

THE AIRLINES
^ This DD has been kinda paraphrased from Hotcopper user Gizard with plenty of googling by myself. Actually I did all the googling and the sick announcement link was me too. Just sayin'.

Finally, in my last post, u/jinglemoon dropped a little spruik from having actually used the service and I think they should post it again if they want.

Users in multiple subreddits Press X to Doubt™ reading about the UK giving out a visa by month's end that'll allow 70% of Hong Kong to live in them.

WorldNews

Fuck off Boris This is disgusting in reality. The UK already has. A healthcare and housing crisis. Let's just welcome another 5 million people to come and drive up the prices and change our culture for the worse.
Hahah, this is hilarious and must be driving those who voted brexit crazy! I myself, welcome them.
>I voted Brexit and this is great news.
Cool
>Hopefully your strange mass generalisation can be course corrected abit. But that would be foolish considering the black or white stances people take on effectively, everything.
A bad decision is still a bad decision. There's no getting around it by trying to shame people.
Fuck off we are full
You vote a con you're the problem, we need to remember this shit show next election.
Yep , that’s what the U.K. needs , more immigrants. 🙄
Well about time they pull their heads out of their asses. Very fast acting clap clap not even half the population was slaughtered before help arrived! What a world we live in! <3
They are probably better off where they are. We are a shithole country right now. Led by a British Trump and dripping with bigots and racists.
Go to Germany, France, Italy, Spain or any other country in the EU. Your prospects will be much greater and so will be your quailty of life.
Hilarious. I wonder what BRIXTERS think. Nationalism is a lost conception. The internet has made us all the same. Globalisation is not just a concept it’s how humanity functions now. Take it or leave it but nationalism is dead. Unless you prefer to stay in the Dark ages
Finally! We owed them this. We completely fucked them over and broke our promises with the way we handed HK back.
"get rid of guns, guns are bad" I bet those Hong Kong people wouldnt have to flea to the UK if they had weapons. Please take a look at america... At the brink of giving up their guns to socialist idiots.
Thats how you know that China defeated the UK.
This is truly disgusting. We should never have these people forced upon us. Our governments have sold the native population down the river.
This is stupid. Wouldn't UK just get infiltrated by Chinese spies.
Smart move with Scotland leaving the Kingdom.... eventually.
Thank god I don’t live in The UK. Would hate to have all these animals come in to my already shit country
Many will generate wealth as entrepreneurs. They will create jobs.
Hong Kong person goes to live in UK. Still no freedom of speech
i love the cultural suicide path that the UK has been on. first they import arabs, and indians and africans (black), now 5.4 million asians. i sure hope this ends well. (asians wont tollerate the other three races) the memes that will come out of this....
Reddit: Hahaha fuck the CCP Also Reddit: Immigrants? Refugees? In my country? REEEEEE
Good fucking job lads. That’s one way to free Hong Kong (WARNING: LOTS OF DRAMA)
DELETED THREAD
so the uk let in the muslim refugees in and are now dealing with the horrible outcome of that and now they are letting 5.4 million more refugees. I'm kind of confused did they not remember how shit it worked the first time? roving bands of rape gangs, the governments giving children away to pedophiles so they wouldn't look racist, the media hiding all the crime they are committing there? well, good luck
How are the professional class going to feel about the increased competition for work? I'm sure this is what they had in mind voting for Brexit.

GenZedong

Sino

The Brits are going to end up taking those extremist, freeloading people but hey not China's problem anymore. UK is going down the drain quicker than I thought. I need more popcorn pls
Who sounds more trustworthy about honoring promises of a "path to citizenship" than the country that just broke out of the EU over immigration?
Let the traitors leave, just to sure to revoke HK residency and Chinese citizenship along the way. Also sure to background check the hell of them if they apply for any sort of visa to enter China.
Moving to the UK? In 2020? Good luck to 'em, I say.

UpliftingNews

Yeah, the UK really needs more foreigners.
They had the right to live in the UK before it was turned over and then they had the right to leave and go someplace else after that time until the chinese gain full control but then they started losing it and rioting and now China isn't going to allow a small city to overturn an entire country the size of a continent... How did they think this was going to turn out? Those people don't want to come to the UK .. they could have. They want to change China... WELL THAT ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN... I really really really don't like China... but the people of Hong Kong are insane... And then what happens if 5 million of them come to the UK? THAT WILL BE A LAUGH RIOT... there will be cities where no one speaks anything but chinese and the UK is a small area compared to other countries .. you aren't talking about Russia accepting 5 Million people that would be like no impact at all... YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT 10% OF THE POPULATION... ONE OUT OF EVERY 10 PEOPLE BEING FROM HONG KONG WITH PROBABLY ZERO ENGLISH SKILLS OR MARKETABLE SKILLS ... MOST OF THEM WILL END UP ON WELFARE 1 out of every 10 people 1 out of every 10 homes 1 out of every 10 in a classroom THATS A LOT... THAT IS A SERIOUS AMOUNT OF PEOPLE but it won't happen .. they don't want to move to the UK... maybe 100k might maybe but that would be an extreme number. I think they would rather move to singapore or taiwan than to the UK.. but some might want to move to the UK.
The UK is already overpopulated, so opening the door to potentially 5 MILLION+ more, during a global pandemic, is absolutely bonkers.
I realized the extent of your ignorance when I read your claim that most HK immigrants will be on welfare. If you knew anything about HK people and culture you would know that is the most unlikely outcome possible. 5 million HK immigrants coming into the UK will change a lot of things, but I can guarantee them being on welfare isn’t one of them.
The US banks could certainly use their money. This would be like Apple finally moving its money out of Ireland
Downvotes to you and your sensible opinion about immigration!
By that logic, we shouldn't have immigrants because Hitler was one.
Funny thing is, they don't even know why they downvoted. They are discouraged to think critically.

UKPolitics

I'm curious. Maybe some Tory could explain why these immigrants are ok but those with brown skin are not. They should all be welcome in my eyes where there is a genuine need.
"Maybe some Tory could explain why these immigrants are ok but those with brown skin are not. They should all be welcome in my eyes where there is a genuine need" Can you point me to a govt policy that has ever tried to stop 'people with brown skin' coming to the country? Our rate of immigration from Asia has always been far higher than any other region of the world. Brexiteers, not just Torys might I add dislike unchecked immigration. This is not unchecked immigration, we have opened immigration to BNO passport holders because China has violated the HK treaty. Points based immigration isn't seen as racist in any country except ours apparently
This is great news. I just hope they get looked after and not treated like 'yellow slaves' when in the UK. Brexit taught me that the British public can be quite feisty when it comes to racism. These poor fellas are also refugees, but they are much more skilled and wealthy than the traditional middle Eastern variety that Brexit promoted itself upon. Upon coming to the UK they will be underpaid and over worked, but HK life will be similar if not worse, making them super competitive. Give it 10 years and their competitiveness will again elude to the 'they're stealing our jobs', 'they don't speak english' & 'they're not white'. I just hope the British public as a whole is understands it's not colonial times anymore, and the world has moved on from racism.
If we have another migration wave we'll have another nationalist, xenophobic wave in politics.
"It is making this "generous" offer to residents of its former colony because it believes China is undermining Hong Kong's rights and freedoms." Anyone think the BBC sound like they're being sarcastic here? The quotations around generous implies that it isn't? Regardless, great move here no matter who you support
More competition for Housing, more competition for Jobs, more strain on the Welfare system and the NHS, huzzah!/ More tax collected to support the welfare system, more products and services, more doctors and nurses for the NHS. Huzzah.

[NAFA][Poly] All about NAFA for prospective students! (mainly SOAD stuff)

Hi there! NAFA grad from COVID batch here! I previously wrote tips to not waste time at NAFA. Currently studying in NUS. If you're looking for post O levels/ITE options, look no further! 4 years ago, I attended NAFA's open house after receiving my O level results and back then I was as clueless as the many DMs I've received asking about NAFA ;) . So I'm making this post to clear those doubts!
Edit: Added academic calendar to general curriculum and important degree update

Things to note before entering NAFA

[1] What is NAFA and who is it for?
NAFA, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts is Singapore's pioneering art school. It is a private arts institution. It provides diploma studies with a study duration of 3 years just like poly. The special thing about NAFA is that it provides 1-year degree programmes which any student (usually from relevant diploma courses) can pick up.
Well, we always say 'art is subjective', it is a freedom of expression. The school is really open to anyone (and that is on the account that you have a portfolio or passed the test). Literally, you can have aunties and uncles as your classmates! You also have people doing art because it's fun but in all seriousness do not sign up if that's what you think. I'd like to think of NAFA as a school that guides you in the beginning and later on they just kind of let everyone be independent learners. Anybody can say that NAFA teaches you the foundation but they do not intend to fully teach you long term or up to a professional level. The school is excellent for people who have existing art skills (you've won SYF, art awards, distinction in art before you were even 17 years old) and wish to be a local artist. It is also great for people who are passionate and have some sort of basic skill or are/have developing skills already (that's me!) however this group should avoid Fine Arts. You can also be passionate and start on a blank slate but be prepared to work doubly hard for the grades. The school is not competitive, it depends on talent to stand out.
Do not come if you are doing for the sake of the diploma because the difficulty of NAFA's diploma is no joking matter. Dropping out is common in every course and you do not wish to contribute to that. That is also the whole point of NAFA charging exorbitant school fees so that you don't run away. Many people actually bet their future on NAFA because they couldn't go to poly/uni course of their choice and it ends up being wasted because it's not what they wanted! You may have heard people of saying that the school's standard is trash but the truth is, it's not the school's problem 100% of the time.
For students looking to enter NAFA Foundation Programme, it's still new and dodgy. I strongly advise you guys to take O levels and head to Poly instead if you still wish to pursue further education at local universities. I personally find no point in skipping a year and getting L1R4>25 with an O level cert where you might've passed math seems to be a more lucrative choice to use for entering NAFA. The only benefit you're getting from the programme is a debt $$$.
Entry requirements:
O Level: L1R4 equal or less than 25 points excluding English (can use CCA points)
ITE: Full-time Higher Nitec or Nitec
Other Local/International Admission Requirements
Important note:
NAFA diplomas do not equate with polytechnic diplomas.
NAFA being the oldest art school does not mean that it is the best place to go instead of Laselle.

[2] Available Courses
One misconception is that NAFA has double diploma programmes for 3D Design. I'd like to announce that it is false. The school is not capable of teaching 2 types of diploma at a time but rather mash it up. So if you intend to take my course for example Diploma in Design (Landscape and Architecture), it is usually the 1st word that is mainly taught which is 'Landscape'.

List of courses:
School of Art and Design
3D Design
Design & media
Fine Art
Fashion Studies
School of Arts Management, Dance and Theatre
Arts Management
Dance
Music
Theatre

[3] When and how to apply?
Once you received your results is usually the time applications are open. Local and international students have until March to apply. It varies annually. More here ->How to apply
Method of Application: Online portfolio submission or physical admission test
Neither is better than the other. You method depends on whether you can show what you have within a given deadline.

Online Portfolio Submission
Minimum 10 images, various mediums allowed and a short writeup of 100 words.
1.Make the portfolio for the course that you want
To make them pick you directly for the course, make it look like you are built for the course.
2. Have a variety of work
Fine Arts doesn't only consist of drawings, it can also include some sort of sculpture or performance work. Same goes for the other departments. Click here for what each course requires. If you wish to showcase a single type of work because you are unable to show more, it can make your portfolio look okay/bad compared to other people.
3. A passionate statement
Only 100 words. Tbh I wrote what I wished to do after my diploma (plans have since changed and it was an odd statement lol). I don't suggest writing about your contribution to the sch because as long as you're a student you're contributing. Make it short and simple.

In case anyone is wondering, my application portfolio was mediocre, showing 11 images consisting of sketches/paintings/photos. If you have a god-tier portfolio because you have that artistic talent, there's a good chance to achieve a 1st-year full-coverage scholarship once you step into NAFA. You can submit whenever you want but my estimated deadline was 2 weeks after applying at the open house which waived my application fees ($70 better treat yourself Haidilao).

Admission Test (if someone has taken the test feel free to provide more info)
The test dates are staggered once per month from January-March. Held in groups. Consists of a drawing test and write-up.
I only know that the drawing test isn't difficult. People who took the test do not intend to submit a portfolio as it's quick and efficient. Nothing much to add on.
Important note:
If you are writing a 2nd choice as a safety net please be cautious. I do not recommend as you may get the 2nd choice instead if the slots for your 1st choice becomes full. They will just shift you to the 2nd choice and that's where the 'appeal' part comes.
Choose to submit a portfolio if you can commit to the deadline, it usually gives you an upper hand over admission test applicants because you're showcasing more.

[4] Application Timeline (I only know O levels if anyone can kindly tell me I'll update)
O levels:
January
Receive results > submit JAE > apply for NAFA
February
Wait for JAE AND NAFA results > receive JAE results 1st > receive NAFA results 2nd
You’ll receive NAFA results before poly starts unless you apply late. I applied during Jan on the day of the open house and got my results mid-end Feb. March is the last month to receive results.

[5] Financial Aid
NAFA Financial Aid
Now, we all know private school isn't cheap and many passionate young souls I've met depend heavily on financial aid like I do. If you're a Singaporean with a tight family income, the bursary is attainable for you. It covers half of the annual school fee. Can only be taken once for each year of study. If you are able to claim the bursary for all your years, you’d pay a total of $7050.
For those who are hoping to start at NAFA but is at a really tight end, you need perfect grades in art and portfolio to be considered a scholarship/merit in your first year. You'll need testimonials and pass the interview. If you ain’t good in art, pass this opportunity however you can work for scholarship/merit during your diploma years. I’d score close to the 4.0 (3.8X) in Year 1 in order to get a scholarship to cover my Year 2 fees.
Other options are the 0% interest study loan by DBS. You can make use of your PSEA which you can also use your sibling account to cover your own sch fees.
Last option but not really one is the student assistantship scheme should you already be a student of NAFA. The pay is peanuts, I would not recommend but it's nice to have a one-liner in your resume that you did some work for the school :).
There are NAFA students with a possibly far worse situation than yours but they are extremely talented and hardworking to end up not paying a single cent. NAFA is really expensive so if you do intend to work to cover the fees, take care of your grades as well. It is not impossible to do so. I chose to not work as I was in a hectic design course and needed to maintain my grade for university.

Next, you would need to understand how the system works.

During your study

[1] Useful Acronyms
SOAD: School of Art and Design (Department)
SOAMDT: School of Arts Management, Dance and Theatre
SOM: School of Music
D&M: Design and Media
FA: Fine Arts
3DD: 3D Design
FS: Fashion Studies
FYP: Final Year Project (used in almost every SOAD course lol)
OIP: Overseas Immersion Programme

[2] Life at NAFA
So you wish to know how life is like at NAFA? First thing, don't expect the same amount of glitz and glamour that exists in polys. It's much quieter where you won't even hear a mouse die.
Because entry to the school is quite easy, the population regularly consists of graduated ITE students (can’t make it to poly/NAFA is the last golden ticket) alongside many international students. O level cert holders are like a small 10% or less. So if you’re young, prepare to take care of the older lot and expect to carry lazy people.
You have to be very committed to the course and can’t skip class. More than 3 times and they start deducting marks. The workload is heavy and even if it comes in small numbers, it is intense. The number of student to lecturer ratio is not a big difference but later on, consultation times may not suffice. Facilities are sufficient unless you’re in a design course. There are CCAs in the sch but not all courses got time for it. Staying in school late is a common culture. Fine Arts students after class just camp in their respective studios and design students would camp till closing 11 pm at the computer lab waiting for renders to finish. Every student will experience staying late and you can say its #lifeatnafa.
The culture here is not as toxic and dramatic as poly but more towards weird because we’re creative artsy-fartsy people. It’s easy to get along with course mates but there’s a chance for things to get somehow cranky along the way. Could be you or your classmate. Everyone is pretty open and wild. There’s a lack of competitiveness which is both good and bad.
There won't be a course that goes without presentations. That's the point of producing works ain't it, to show it off to the audience. Group work to individual work ratio is about 3:6 so if you worry about bad groupmates, don't worry I've faced them too and it can't be helped ;). Carrying other people during group work is also common. NAFA does stand for lazy people what to do. Your complaints hold no power. (Arguably, many students want the school to make entry to the courses more difficult as there seem to be too many bums to handle)
If you're mentally depressed or anything the school does try to help but no legit support system other than the ECG counsellor (which I find it practically useless). Now, the school deals with this quite often so they don't give a damn about your life. Ownself take care ownself is the usual term.

School events anyone can participate:
Open House (1-day Sentosa fun time with other Open House ambassador)
Orientation (has a 1-night camp! Recommend)
NAFA Fun Day
Overseas Immersion Programme (1-3 weeks long, Asian countries. Recommend but need $)
Student Assistantship Programme (1 year-long contract. Peanut pay)

The list of programmes here may not seem much but you can add it in your portfolio (except Fun Day). There may be volunteer work available within some courses itself. Do try to be active
And that's about it. Nothing special just expensive and less fun.

[3] Understanding NAFA's SOAD Standard
Take a look at what past graduates have produced within their 3 years as a student. Only you can judge whether the school is great or the right fit for your goals (in being able to attain this particular level of skill for XXX course once you graduate for example). The best standard can be found under the best graduate tab.
2020 The Grad Expectations
Graduation Showcase

[4] General Curriculum
Academic Calendar
The 1st semester of your study begins at the start of August and usually ends late November or early December depending on the type of assessment received. The 2nd semester begins in January till May. The span of 1 semester is always around 4 months with a 1-week break in between. We don't really have any sort of term 1/2 thing like poly and is much compressed, so breaks are less. However, you do get compensated with a 3-month vacation between years so that's fair.

*Applicable to SOAD only
Year 1
1st Semester: Foundation Study (not the same as NAFA Foundation programme for N level)
+ Basic art and design theory
+General Education
2nd Semester: Course Foundation
+ General Education
+ Basic course theory
(+ Electives)

Year 2
1st Semester: 2nd Set of Course Foundation
+ Intermediate theory
+ 1st project
+ Basic report/essay writing
(+ Electives)
2nd Semester: Last set of Course Foundation
+ Another set of projects
(+ Electives)

Year 3
1st Semester: Internship/School project (wouldn't want to get this)
2nd Semester: Final Year project (practically on your own)
+ Report/Essay writing
+ Research and development
(+ Electives, not recommended to do during this semester)

It’s clearly not much different from poly, slightly worse at certain points. Weekly school hours per week will increase each semester e.g year 1 sem 1 is 18hrs a week for classes, next semester you may get an additional 2-4 hrs increase of class time. The longest time I had for class each week was 24hrs, pretty sure the same goes for any SOAD course. Do expect late-night classes. It is inevitable because most lecturers are teaching part-time so do bear with them.
Important note:
For a lighter schedule, do electives early as that's one of the simplest things to do.
The difference in timetable won't affect application to university.

[5] Electives
1 common mistake students commit is not reading the student handbook (from studentnet)/contract on the number of credits required for graduation. They end up finishing their electives during Year 3 Semester 2 which is the time one should focus on their FYP. Start doing your electives once you’re in Year 1 Semester 2. Good planning consists of not stuffing your modules until it’s way past 24hrs/week (also known as overloading). You’re required to do cross-disciplinary modules 2-6 credits worth (meaning not related to your course, if you’re from D&M you have to do either FA/3DD/FS) and course-related electives worth 2-6 credits. Days before module registration, plan out the electives you want to do based on your given timetable and then rush to pick on the day of the module registration with no hesitation to secure your placement. You may have to do an elective that is unfamiliar to you.
My sample plan:
Year 1 sem 1: Can’t choose yet
Year 1 sem 2: Photography (Highly recommend, popular as well but must have time and skill + a friend who's free who be your model). 2 credits
Year 1 sem 2 special term (aka holiday): OIP to Hangzhou. China Academy of Arts for 3 weeks. Considered cross-disciplinary to FA. 3 weeks long. 4 credits
Year 2 sem 1: Intro to Rapid prototyping from 3DD (laser cut/3D print) (didn’t really learn how to use the machine as there are technical officers and I messed up at the end but still passed, great elective for embarrassing yourself if you’re a 3DD student who frequents the workshop ;) ). 2 credits
Year 2 sem 2 - onwards: No more electives can focus on FYP
Important note:
Plan well so you accumulate just nice 120 credits for graduation. No point in exceeding the total credits as you have to pay extra for it. If you miss a few credits for graduation, you will be retained for another semester to finish.
Cheat tip: if you go on the OIP to China only, you instantly get cross-disciplinary credits.

[6] Using Workshops/Loaning of equipment

[7] Internships
Usually done in Year 3 Semester 1, this is one of the key semesters every student should complete for it plays a very important role in your portfolio for finding a job post-graduation. The school has a reputable network, however for courses like Fine Art and illustration the intern positions may be limited because Singapore is not very welcoming for such talents. There are top companies who are willing to hire NAFA students on the basis that they have good grades and a juicy portfolio. So if you want the best, you got to be the best.

[8] Overseas Immersion/School Exchange Programmes
Slots for OIP is limited (especially the ones to China), requires an interview. I think the max for some trips were 35-40 people at most. There are subsidies available and coverage varies.

Places NAFA has flown to:
*Xiamen (3 weeks)
*Hangzhou, China Academy of Arts (3 weeks)
*Beijing, Beijing Technology University (3 weeks)
Bangkok (1 week?)
Korea (might've stopped)
Japan (might've stopped)

*Special programme during Year 1 Semester 2 vacation only
I forgot the cost but I've personally have flown to Hangzhou. Best experience ever despite getting a C. Crazy stuff happened at one of the finest Arts school in China :)
Important note:
If you miss the chance to fly, fret not, NAFA's degree programme is a collaboration with a foreign university and they will open an exchange programme for 1 month (that is if COVID doesn't persist). Not sure about the cost though.

[9] CCA (The price list is not updated as of 2020)
List of currently available CCAs:
  1. Muay Thai ( $63 10 sessions)
  2. Yoga (basic: $50 12 sessions, intermediate: $42 10 sessions)
  3. Entrepreneurship club
  4. Urban runners club
  5. Volunteer club
Short story: Long ago, I actually joined the photography club only to end up leaving before they even started anything because everybody was too busy to meet up and thus disbanded.
During my time, Muay Thai is the most popular followed by Yoga. Do check out NAFA OSC account on IG to find out what they do. Looks like they added Korean language class too hmm

Post-Diploma

[1] Furthering Studies at NAFA
NAFA Degree courses for Arts Management and Music
Update (thanks to the comment below): NAFA is going to change its programmes and collaboration starting from AY2021/2022. The new degree courses are collaborating with UAL (University of Arts, London) and it’s changing from one year course to two-year course which includes 5-7 weeks of going to the colleges in London. All the courses are affected except for Arts Management and Music.
Students with A Level certificates, as well as those without relevant diplomas will be allowed to enrol into NAFA’s degree programmes.
The stuff I wrote may not apply anymore but I will still leave it here as a reference for NAFA's 1-year degree. The degree website is empty for now.

How do you determine if taking NAFA degree is worth it and why should you take or not take the NAFA degree? There’s always a mixed bag of opinions over the degree. Personally, I’m not a fan of it but I won’t be biased and input the pros and cons that can better aid in one’s decision.

PROS
1.Existing CGPA from diploma is Low
Finding a job with the private diploma cert and low grades can affect your career progression. Make up for the mistakes that were done during the diploma study and try to do well for the degree.
2. High CGPA, expecting a scholarship (or free ride) for the degree course
If you easily meet these 3 criteria (1) Singapore's local unis are too expensive for your taste, (2) you might be older than 21 years old and need to work ASAP, (3) "broke" but did quite well during your diploma and has an excellent portfolio to show, taking the degree might not be such a bad option. In some instances, the 1-year degree + years of work experience can allow one to take up a master degree at local uni if the pre-requisites are met.
3. Changing career path (still art-related)
It's possible to change paths from design to fine arts. However, for a degree that lasts only for 1 year, it is impossible to acquire a decent knowledge at a degree level compared to the diploma stage in my opinion. Usually, the people who apply for the design degree e.g Spatial Design, have prior knowledge from the related course of study either from NAFA or other polys. 1 year is not enough but never said that it’s impossible and has been done over the years.
4. Increase in starting salary
Nobody says this when asked why they want to take the degree but I'm sure they want an increase in starting salary. If you have a fear of starting out with low pay and want to bump it up by sacrificing a short amount of time and money, go for it.

CONS
1.Not a legit degree
This isn’t a biased answer but an honest one. NAFA's degree is not a professional degree. 1-year won't be enough to acquire a lot of knowledge. There are no internships and full training of Softwares/techniques whatsoever. It's basically aimed at NAFA/poly students who have an existing skillset and internship experience during their diploma studies or international students with similar qualifications. I'm not discouraging anyone who wishes to take the degree because some companies do take in students and if they're lucky, they can work for them after graduation.
2. Not 100% applicable for postgraduate studies in Singapore
The local universities may not kindly cater to all NAFA degrees. A number of students after getting a NAFA degree would choose to study overseas to pursue a masters. If getting NAFA's degree is a mean of broadening your studying experience by going overseas, why not? One real-life example that I've heard of works is landscape and architecture diploma + Spatial Design degree + 3 years of work experience at a good company + an excellent portfolio which eventually led this person to enter NUS Masters in Landscape Architecture. Spatial Design has a chance for relevant postgraduate courses although this may not be the same for the other NAFA degrees.
3. Not worth if you are a Singaporean
The cost of NAFA's degree is considered affordable for an international student and it was practically built for them. If a Singaporean were to study at local uni for 3/4 years including subsidies + tuition grant for a design degree, it'd still be cheaper than a NAFA degree. Plus an actual degree from the public unis is still considered much valuable.

If you stand for better higher educational standards after staying there for 3 years, I say work hard and flee.

[2] Furthering studies at a local university
It’s not impossible. It was already allowed a million years ago. It just a matter of effort you put during your diploma years. The current standard at NAFA has dwindled where only less than 10 NAFA grads emerge victoriously so don't be surprised knowing that NAFA barely has high flyers, the school doesn't even push for it. Even my juniors don't know my degree existed 1 year ago...
2 things to note:
  1. NAFA diploma is not allowed entry into many courses that are irrelevant from the diploma unless the GPA is high. The usual entry requirements are GPA 3.5-4.0 also dependent on the 10th percentile, juicy portfolio and testimonial (I didn't need it FYI)
  2. Chances are higher for relevant degrees although any degree will definitely have entry requirements to meet. Some degrees require O level pass in elementary/additional math (they say they don't check anymore after 2019 but I don't want to play out my chances). I know of students who were optimistic about their GPA but they did not read the instructions beforehand.
You will be fighting with the best from poly, JC and beyond. Do your best to represent yourself as a student from NAFA and you'll find a way to stand out from the crowd.
A warning note to future/existing international NAFA students: I know most of y’all only started living in Singapore just before the beginning of the diploma. I don’t know whether your international qualifications can equate with O levels so consider your future plans in Singapore carefully. My dear international classmates weren’t called up for uni interview (GPA already wasn’t helping, no offence) and the super stringent admission criteria crippled their hopes. Many have remained in NAFA to do the 1-year degree or have returned to their home country. I cannot answer for employment rates. If neither one is the option you want to end up with, do take note.

[3] Finding Work
COVID really struck a lot of people hard. I can count the number of my coursemate who is employed with my 10 fingers or less. The full-time employment rate is terrible, believe it or not. The school hides it like the fine print in the student contract. Here in the Graduate Employment Survey, you can see the ending choices of NAFA graduates.
I really can't tell the success rate of one finding a job even based on IG stories itself. I see quite a number of freelancer or people doing other things. Who will remain in the same industry? The top 10% in the cohort but even the best have struggled or are still struggling to find a job. NAFA students are not only fighting among themselves, there are poly students with similarly named courses out there too with a proper educational lineup that a NAFA diploma can't compare with.
A portfolio is usually the passport for finding work and the past 3 years of study is meant to fill it up. Don't waste time being a stubborn student especially when you will be spending a lot of money to study. The best way to make yourself look hire-able is to definitely have good grades and a portfolio. Can't emphasise anything else other than that to convince the company to hire you.

Wrapping it up

NAFA is one of the schools that provides a unique and alternative route away from the usual poly lifestyle. I had some crazy times in there be it social life or workload. It isn't a bad school (I quote 5/10) but if you can work for what you love, you'll do just fine.
The Open House is open and I suggest for those interested to take a look. A whole bunch of admission guides are up for talks.

KJ's statement: An Update on Vaccine Procurement

https://www.khairykj.com/statements/an-update-on-vaccine-procurement
Jan 14
2021 will be the year of vaccination, bringing with it some light at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. As more countries start receiving and rolling out their vaccination programmes, many Malaysians have asked for updates on our vaccine supply. As co-chair of the special COVID-19 vaccine committee (JKJAV), I want to give you some updates.
Speed of Procurement
There have been some concerns about the speed of our vaccine procurement, especially with news of some of our neighbours receiving their vaccines. I would like to state that Malaysia is on track to receive our first delivery before the end of February. This timeline was agreed to when we negotiated our contract with Pfizer in November 2020. This will still place us among the fastest in Asia Pacific to access COVID-19 vaccines (https://codeblue.galencentre.org/2020/12/22/malaysia-among-fastest-in-asia-pacific-to-access-covid-19-vaccines-fitch).
I am happy that our neighbours, namely Singapore and Indonesia, have started their vaccination programmes. I wish them well as they roll it out. But let me also clarify some concerns when comparing us to these countries.
Singapore was able to ‘place bets’ (https://apnews.com/article/science-singapore-coronavirus-pandemic-lee-hsien-loong-coronavirus-vaccine-5bf8461b9d2d32ec08d56fcf5958317a) on vaccine candidates earlier because of greater resources. With a budget of more than S$ 1 billion for their population (which is about the same budget as Malaysia for our population that is roughly five times larger), I am sure they entered into advanced purchase agreements at premium prices ahead of publication of interim trial data.
Indonesia has started rolling out the Sinovac vaccine and is one of the first countries to authorise its use outside of China because Indonesia conducted phase three clinical trials for Sinovac. They were able to approve Sinovac because they had clinical data from their own trials. And it is understandable that Sinovac would prioritise countries that ran clinical trials of their vaccine.
Why was Malaysia not a site for clinical trials for Sinovac? Sinovac trials started last year and when we offered Malaysia as a trial site, the number of positive cases were low. So was the rate of infectivity. Hence Sinovac declined to include Malaysia in their Phase III trial programme. Clinical trials need high infectivity rates to be successful.
So, Malaysia is not slow in receiving vaccines. Yes, we are not among the first. Many developed countries have received their vaccines. This is because they have paid a lot to corner the market (https://www.oxfam.org/en/press-releases/small-group-rich-nations-have-bought-more-half-future-supply-leading-covid-19) even before the availability of safety and efficacy data. But we are certainly not laggards. For example, Japan placed its order for the Pfizer vaccine in July 2020 and will receive it in February, which is the same time as us. South Korea placed its order in December 2020 (a month after us) and is scheduled to receive the Pfizer vaccine in Q3 2021. We made informed procurement decisions based on clinical data assessment without having to pay huge premiums and down payments. And crucially we can learn from the rollout in other countries to ensure an effective implementation of our vaccination campaign.
Delivery Schedule
When we announced our first delivery for sometime before the end of February, some people assumed that all our vaccines will arrive then. There are politicians who have assumed that we can even have elections in March because everyone will be inoculated by then.
First, no country receives their entire order in one shot. The delivery is staggered based on a quarterly schedule. For our Pfizer order we will receive 1 million doses in Q1 2021, 1.7 million doses in Q2, 5.8 million doses in Q3 and 4.3 million doses in Q4. The delivery of our orders with other manufacturers will also be staggered. This is the reality of global manufacturing capacity for COVID-19 vaccines and demand outstripping supply.
Based on this delivery schedule, we have mapped out the vaccination priority list. Our first objective is to protect those who are most vulnerable. Frontline workers from the healthcare and security sectors will go first. Then senior citizens and people with chronic illnesses. Only then we will move on to the general population in order to get to meaningful herd immunity threshold. If you are a healthy adult under 60 and not a frontline worker, it is safe to assume that your turn will come by Q3 or after. This is the same for many other countries. It is important to manage our expectations. A February delivery schedule does not mean everyone is vaccinated in February. In fact, Malaysia’s vaccination plan will span 18 months. While we will try our best to get as many people vaccinated within one year, we want to be prudent in our timeline.
Varying Efficacy Data
There has also been some concerns about the efficacy data announcement from Sinovac’s trial in Brazil. Since Sinovac is one of the vaccines we are negotiating to purchase, there have been questions if we should proceed with this.
I would like to reiterate that when negotiating, we have always insisted that the vaccines must be approved and registered by our regulatory agency, the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA), before the agreement is operationalised. That is why refundable deposits and payment clawbacks are some of the conditions that we have built into the negotiations.
In the Sinovac case, our Vaccine Selection Technical Working Group (TWG) chaired by Dr Kalaiarasu Peariasamy, Director of the Institute of Clinical Research, is analysing the announcement and will subsequently advise me on the way forward.
Whatever the decision, I want to assure you that we will only get vaccines that are safe and efficacious for Malaysians.
Rebalancing the Portfolio
As more clinical data is announced and published, we must be nimble and flexible enough to rebalance our vaccine portfolio. This means that what has already been announced may change in the future. We may add more of a particular vaccine and even not exercise some of the other agreements. This will be based on clinical data, commercial terms and availability. The TWG will regularly update me on the data in parallel with the commercial team’s negotiations on price and availability. At all times, we will ensure the vaccines we get are safe and efficacious, and Malaysia’s financial interests are protected.
I will provide Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Science and Innovation regular updates on our vaccine portfolio in the interests of accountability and legislative oversight.
Let me end this update by again managing expectations that the vaccine is not a silver bullet. Until and unless we can get to meaningful herd immunity, where as many people are vaccinated as possible with effective vaccines, we will still need non-pharmaceutical interventions. This means face masks, physical distancing and good personal hygiene will be part of our daily lives even when we roll out the vaccines.
I will be updating Malaysians on a regular basis on our vaccine supply and continue to welcome questions, feedback and criticism.

MAC's Sangley Point award junked by Cavite gov't (Thursday, Jan 28)

Happy Thursday, Barkada --

The PSE closed down 114 points (!!) to 6864 ▼1.6%.

Thanks to Mark for spotting the terrible spelling error in yesterday's meme. I was trying to fit the "JG Summit prioritized itself over CEB" line in big text, and wondered what I did to get it to fit. I like to think it's out-of-the-box thinking to just drop the "ri" from "prioritized" to make it work.
Shout-out to Chris for emailing to ask about alternatives to COL as an online broker. The short answer (IMHO) is that if you're a trader, you need conditional orders. So, I'm recommending brokers like FMSec and AAA. I'm going to do a whole thing next week on how to set a conditional order to protect your money. Stay tuned!
Shout-out to rga19 for the Reddit award, and to _lucid__ for the positive feedback, and for asking good questions about investing basics

December 2020 Guide to Getting A Driving License at SSDC

When I was researching online about how my driving journey for class 3 license as a school student would be, I discovered that while there were a lot of tips scattered here and there, cohesive guides were rare and outdated with varying degrees. There were even fewer regarding SSDC, which is more ulu than the 2 other driving centers. Thus, I promised myself to the higher powers in the world that when I pass the test, I will give back to society and write an updated guide as of December 2020 about what is the current situation like. Three things to note: First, there were still many changes and updates even during my 3.5 months journey the driving school, and you should expect many more to come. Secondly, this is after COVID circuit breaker era, so to the future you who are reading this, hopefully, the pandemic is over and there may be changes, but changes in this aspect should be unimportant. The third thing, I have coordination issues, which made my driving journey a lot more difficult, just a little something to take into consideration when listening to my story. Heads up, getting a license in Singapore is filled with LOTS OF hassle, so be prepared. Without further ado, let’s start!
The first hurdle you need to clear is to register an account and pass your BTT. Their steps overlap so I will explain them together. What do you need to start an account? Paylah and at least $2K (Ok, you don’t technically need so much cash to start the account, but it’s important to have, explain later). Go to the SSDC website, register an account online. You will pay a lump sum for all the miscellaneous things, which includes the eye test and the BTT & FTT theory book (so don’t buy!). I always paid using Paylah. You have an account now, good. It’s a bit confusing hereon. I will list the steps before I explain why.

One question that has no answers elsewhere is: If you watch the videos online, do you still need to go for the physical theory classes? Answer is: No. You either watch the videos online OR go and attend physical classes, and you only need to do one of them. Obviously, I chose the videos, and I watched them right away I registered my account. You have to watch for at least a few seconds before you can proceed, and there is a mini quiz after each section which you have to get all correct for. In my opinion, BTT is not difficult, but those people who think they can pass with sheer common sense are very mistaken. You need to study for it.
After you watched the videos, you think you can book the theory mock test, right? No, you need to pass your eye test before they allow you to book the mock test. For me, I registered my account on a Saturday. I studied the BTT with the e-PDF BTT theory book over the weekend. Then, hopefully, when I go to SSDC to do the eye test on Monday, I can try to see if I can book a mock test right afterward and pass it on the same day.
On Monday, I went to SSDC. A simple layout of SSDC. Level 1 is the lobby and the traffic police department. All your real-deal tests like BTT, FTT, and the eventual PT, as well as the actual test circuit, are all on level 1. Don’t go to the wrong level. Level 2 is parking I think, but I never went there as there is an escalator that takes you straight from level 1 to level 3, which is where you will spend the majority of your time. Level 3 is the reception for SSDC, as well as the place to report for your driving lessons. Level 4 is classrooms for theory lessons, BTT & FTT trial practices, and mock tests (TTT), as well as the simulator lessons. Level 5 is the roof, mostly for motorcycles and sometimes driving lessons for cars.
Due to COVID, they will usually ask everyone about their intentions before letting you into the lobby. When I went, I was stopped right there. Apparently, they strongly encourage you to book an appt before coming, and they don’t really allow walk-in. However, since I was there already and have nothing on for the rest of the day, I asked if I can just wait. They said okay. So, I took a queue number joined a group a people waiting in the lobby… for the chance to proceed to the third floor! Yes, you are not even at the reception yet, you’re just queueing for the chance to go to the third floor. Why didn’t I choose an appt? The next appt date is a whole week later! I decided to just sit there and study for my BTT. Do note if the lobby is filled up, they won’t even let you enter to wait. My visit from the start till the end took 3 hours. Damn tired. However, if you come at a quieter time (like early morning once they open, after 3:30 on Tuesday- Thursdays), your waiting time can be shortened to about an hour. If you want anything shorter than this, book an appointment. Do not come at 2:30 pm, cause 2:30 - 3:30 is their break time. So I waited in the lobby, wait wait wait, got to go to level 3 to queue to get ANOTHER queue number, wait wait wait, then I finally get to a counter. They did my eye test and later take a photo. NOTE! This photo they are taking right here and now is the photo that will eventually be on your license! I read online from old guides that they always take the photo after their PT, so I thought this photo would just for the school’s internal record booklet, so I just anyhow take. The photo was a nightmare. I was so horrified when I realised this fact that I ran down to SSDC right away to retake a photo that shows me as a human. The one important question they will ask you throughout the registration is if you will take manual or auto, so make yourself clear. Can you change it later? Yes, for a fee. Should you take manual or auto? Well, well, well, no offence to newbies but I am so sick of this question and the whole argument around this. I will explain this at the end if I still remember. Anyway, I chose manual. If you choose manual (class 3), you will get a blue booklet. If you choose auto (Class 3A), you will get a pink booklet. Talk about stereotypes. This is just the beginning. In my opinion, there are a lot of implicit and underlying gender stereotypes in the whole SSDC for both females and males. It’s not outright rude or unacceptable, but I just haven’t been anywhere where I have to face gender stereotypes in such a way for a long while. Anyways, don’t lose that booklet. It’s a booklet to record your progress, and in my opinion, for you to keep a record of who are the good and bad instructors.
Finally, you’re done… with registering your account. Phew. I didn’t get to book a TTT session (theory trial test-> the schools' internal practice or mock test sessions) that day, but I got one the next day. I do stand by the advice that it’s best if you book 2 TTT sessions back-to-back. For each session, when you sit in front of the computer, then you need to decide whether you want to do a practice or a mock test. If you have 2 sessions as advised, do a practice for the first one before doing the mock test for the second session. I thought I was well-prepared, so I just did the mock test straightaway. Passing mark for mock test is 46 marks, and I scrapped past with 46 marks, and this was even after I’ve done a lot of mock tests online. I was surprised! I thought I was well-prepared until I started the test. I was shocked to found out that the questions don’t ask you directly things from the book! Sometimes, they even test you things that are not stated clearly in the book, but things you will infer from the book. If you think you just memorise the book can already, no. You have to get used to THE WAY the questions were asked. Learning the book is basic knowledge, but to pass the test, you have to do a lot of questions. After this, I went to popular and bought the printed question bank, and did all the questions. When you have passed the mock test, you can finally book the real BTT test. The waiting time depends on the availability of slots. I registered on 23/08/2020, pass my BTT mock test on 25/08/2020, and passed my BTT real test on 03/09/2020. It took a little more than a week, and I’ll say I’m lucky. Expect more waiting time. This journey will train your patience more than your driving skills.
For the BTT real test, go to level 1! Wait at the area in front of the counter for the TRAFFIC POLICE department. There are some signs on the chair asking BTT/FTT students to wait there. Just wait. Close to the test time, some people will come out with a list and call your name. Show them your IC, squeeze some sanitiser onto your hand, go in, and pass the test. Then, if you have Singpass, register your PDL online. They will say wait until the next day, but impatient me found out that you just need to wait a few hours to register for the PDL.
When I got home, my mother asked if I have passed my PT. I told her, after all I’ve been through, I haven’t even touched a car yet. But that’s coming up next.
After you get your PDL, you can take driving lessons and prepare for FTT at the same time, which was what I did. Since FTT is largely similar to BTT, I will explain FTT first. So, you need to study for your FTT, pass mock test, pass real FTT test. FTT is more difficult than BTT, so be prepared. I studied the book, bought the question bank from popular, did 1 practice session, passed my mock test, and finally cleared my real FTT test will full marks. It’s not super hard, but please don’t underestimate these tests. That’s the failures’ undoing. More importantly, it takes such a long time for retests, so why would you want to waste your time? I was just super eager to get these miscellaneous things over and done with asap.
Finally, let’s move on to the real thing, the driving lessons.

Now, remember what I said about having $2K aside when you start this whole thing? Yes, that’s coming. When the system update my PDL and it finally lets me try to book a driving lesson, I was horrified to find out that the next available slot is *drumroll* 1 month later. Yes, 1 month later! What?? Right there and then, I was ready to cancel my account and go private. However, I remember a previous guide saying that some people will cancel their slot at the last moment. So now, I’m going to impart the ultimate skills to combat this system. Come, my disciples.
You want a slot and it’s available, you book it. You don’t want a slot? Cancel it. However, you can only cancel slots 3 days in advance. If you find out you can’t make it for a timing less than 3 days in advance, you enter the try sell period. This means that you put your slot back up on the market for sale. If someone buys it, good for you and the money is refunded back to you. If no one buys it, you have to attend the slot or waste the money. Now, almost every night, there is going to be someone who can’t make it for tomorrow’s slot, and that’s where you come in to snap that up. That’s also how I booked my first slot just a day later at 05/09/2020, and also how I booked the majority of my slots thereafter. However, if you have a relatively stable schedule, those lessons which are available 1 month later are still very important to you. Thus, you can just dump $2k into your account, and book all the slots 1 month later. Advisable to book about 20-25 slots from the onset, yes from the very first lesson. Don’t wait until later to book. You will prob need at least 20 lessons on average to clear. Then, when you find a try sell lot closer to you, you cancel the slot which is furthest away (no need for try sell if its more than 3 days away, you will be refunded immediately in this case). Your schedule is NOT fixed, in fact, it’s always changing. You found a better slot timing? Cancel this slot and change for that slot. Slot can appear at any time for any day, and it’s an always-changing market, so keep a lookout for it. If you are like a post-a level kid who have too much time on your hand, just camp there, and you will get all the slots you need. Just a thing to take note, if you can try selling your current slot for another try sell slot, you’re gambling. If you cannot sell the slot you don’t want, you will waste money, so take the stakes into the consideration and choose for yourself. Prices are different for peak and non-peak periods. To book all these slots, you will need at least about $2k. Don’t worry, you will get the unused balance back as cash after you pass your PT. If you top-up online, there is an additional $1.07 per top-up, and max top-up $500 each time. Might be nice to top-up at the counter when you get your booklet right at the start.

Now, about driving lessons and driving instructors. In my experience, there are 3 groups of instructors spread across the spectrum of good to bad. On the good side, there are really earnest, nice and patient instructors that will make learning driving fun even if you really suck at driving (like me). There are those which are neutral, they do their job, but nothing outstanding about them. Then, there are those really bad ones. Impatient. Bored. Distracted. Take long breaks. One even left for a toilet break for like 15 minutes. Hey, I didn’t pay for those 15 minutes for you to go to the toilet. But if I have to choose, the most horrible are the ones that are impatient and scold you for making mistakes. And that, my friends, was how my first lesson started. Yes, with the most horrible instructor.
So, I was excited to touch the car for the first time. To be fair, he is not intentionally nasty, but in my opinion, it doesn’t negate the fact that he made my experience horrible. He drove me around the 3rd and 5th floor circuit just to show me around, all the while asking me questions about myself. That was find, but I had a strong feeling he was asking those very stereotypical questions (where school you graduate from? What is job? What car does your father drive?) Pfft. How come you assume only my father drives? Then, instead of introducing to the manual car, he started on a 2 hour persuasion talk on how I should convert to auto. Even in my eagerness/good mood for the first lesson, I was very annoyed by him towards the end. To top it off, he said that since I’m a girl, there’s no need for me to learn manual, and auto will be enough. Like *bleep* you, who the *bleep* are you to determine what’s enough for me? If you tell your daughters to learn auto, that’s your problem, but my parents brought me up to choose the option with more potential, even if that’s the more difficult one. (To be clear, I’m NOT against learning auto. I’ve considered that too. I’m just pissed off by him). Besides, don’t you think a 24-year-old woman is a bit too old to be called a girl? Girl?? I know I look baby-face la, thank you, but please address me appropriately. I didn’t call you an uncle just because you look like one, right? Yes, by the end of the lesson, I didn’t have the excitement or exhilaration mentioned by other learners, I just want to get this over and done with and get out of the car. When I was stopping the car, I released my clutch too quickly again and the car stalled. In that exact moment, I knew he was going to go on and on and on about the manual/auto thing, and sure enough, the next moment he started saying that if I should learn auto since I don’t have to worry about the clutch. Do you know he even went so far as to tell me the fee for switching to auto and told me I just had to counter to ask them that I want to switch to auto? I was thinking *bleep* you! Did I say I want to convert??? *bleep* you! You like auto so much you go and teach auto la! Why come to manual and waste MY time and money. I was displeased.
With the try sell slot, I got another slot the next day, and I was so relieved that there was another instructor. This instructor was TOTALLY different from the auto promoter. The only question he asked me was “where did you stop the last lesson?”, and the lesson starts straightaway. I learned a lot from him, and the lesson was much better.
My third slot was on the third day. This was downright the most horrible lesson I’ve had throughout my journey. This was my first night time lesson, and I wanted to try if I am able to take lessons after work, and also learn at night. My slot was from 6:20- 8:20 p.m.. When I saw my name next to the car number I had for my first lesson, my heart sank and I texted a string of vulgarities to my friend as I head to my car. Yes, it was horrible. It was hot and stuffy in the evening with the masks on, no air-con as the windows had to be rolled down for COVID. That instructor had even less patience than before, though he didn’t mention auto as frequently as before. He didn’t “scold”, but his impatience was so obvious. I was tired from work, and I couldn’t focus as well-> more mistakes, more impatient comments. I was uneasy from driving at night at that dreary industrial building as I was worried about. All these piled together and I felt absolutely horrible when the lesson ended. It was till the point that I even thought about giving up, though I know I will get over it after a good night’s sleep, which I did.
The next morning, the first thing I did was to cancel all the nighttime slots I’ve prebooked. The only right thing auto promoter said was it’s harder to see in the circuit at night, and since none of the PT takes place at night, it will be better to take my lessons during the day. The next thing I did was to research how to block auto promoter. Though my own fatigue and uneasiness contributed to the previous night’s terrible experience, he was a big factor too. I know he doesn’t mean to be mean, but that’s not my problem. I don’t want to see him again. However, it would involve going to the head instructor’s office and telling him and I want to block this instructor, and that’s kind of bad too. doesn’t help that the office is in plain view of all the cars, so argh, I didn’t block him in the end, but I tried to book all my instructors for each lesson thereafter. In any case, I didn’t see him again. Booking your instructors cost an additional $8+, which may seem a lot. However, in my opinion, getting a not-so-good instructor can waste your whole 2 hours’ time and money. Might be better to just pay $8 for a good instructor.
I just want to be clear that not all the instructors are bad. There are some angel instructors, who never ever said a bad thing even when I made horrible mistakes repeatedly. They patiently guided me to do it again and again until I get it right, and we cheer together. There are also instructors that are a mix, they teach very well, but they will also disappear for toilet breaks or end lessons a bit earlier. That’s your choice. It’s a pro and con of learning at school, where you can try various instructors. This means bad instructors at some times, but it also means you can learn different skills from different really good instructors. It’s important because I found that another instructor can find out and pinpoint what the previous instructor didn’t notice, and if you gather all their opinions together, it will really help you to prepare well. I will go more into auto/school later if I feel like it.

In school learning, there are 33 parts categorised into 4 sections. You can clear multiple parts in 1 lesson, but there are also some parts which is compulsory minimum 1 lesson per part. Once you clear part 2, you can go for simulator lesson. Once you clear part 3 (which involves a mock PT test), you can go to the counter to pre-book your PT. Once you clear part 4 (more mock PT tests), you can book PT by yourself online. Given the long queue at the counter, you might as well just try to clear part 4 asap and book the PT on your own online. Advisable to have about 4 revision lessons before your PT. If you pass on the first try, it will like cost you about $2K-3K depending on the number of lessons you take. Now, it sounds like taking school doesn’t sound very nice, but there is a reason why I chose school after all. Let me talk about the simulator lesson first. I a bit tired of typing already, *yawn*
Simulator lesson is a new thing required by LTA for all, whether you are school or private. You have to take 3 simulator lesson in auto or manual version. Basically, you drive an arcade car that vibrates in a way that makes you want to puke through common accident scenarios in Singapore. Seriously, that vibration made me felt so dizzy and sick, and I’m not the only one. Prepare some sour plums before you go. It felt better on the second and third try, when I’m more prepared, but the first try was really horrible. I was wondering why they didn’t allow us to book a 1-hour slot, and instead required three 20minutes slots on different days. I bet car sickness is the main factor. I’d rather drive a real car for 2 hours instead. You have to clear all 3 sessions before you can book your PT. Even though I said this is like an arcade car, you should know that the traffic police department will screen your sessions before they certify you. Yes, that's right, so don't think you can go Fast and Furious on this simulator. Now, the simulator is a pain in the *bleep* too. If you want to clear this extra fast, you have to play with the system quite a bit too. Now, sessions are usually available 1 week later, and most importantly, once you booked a slot, you’re locked out from viewing the available slots again. The tricky thing is, sometimes they will release slots much closer at unpredictable and irregular hours. So what did I do? I book the latest available slot, usually about a week later. Then, late at night when hopefully no one else is online, I cancel my slot and enter the system again. If my slot is still the latest available slot, I booked it back. If a new slot (hooray!), I book a slot. They can be as close as 2 days later. IMPORTANT: you have to be SUPER fast when you do this. why? When you cancel your slot, if someone else happens to be online too, they can take your slot, and you’ll be left with nothing. So be fast! A bit ridiculous, right? All I want to do is just to get a driving license quickly ORZ.

Despite my lack of talent driving, I cleared all the lessons (I took 30) and booked my driving test in just 1.5 months after I registered my account. That involves up to 10 lessons per week at times. So, why did I still took 3.5 months to get my license? Haha, yes, I failed, thrice actually. I made different mistakes each time, but the fatal flaw for all of them was that I was too nervous. Don’t ask me about my total cost, I stopped keeping track after I failed for the first time. The good things about driving a manual car in school is that retest date is the fastest. It’s about a 2-weeks wait on average. 3-week for school-auto learner, and 1 month for all private students. Yup, it’s damn biased. The whole building is run by the school after all. Oh, I think the PT is cheaper for school students too, cause the insurance already covered. I was extremely upset and nervous after each failure, and I thought I would never pass, but I finally, finally managed to do so a few days ago! I kept asking the examiner (who is a very chill and funny person!) if I really passed, and he jokingly said if I ask him one more time, he is going to change to fail. HAHA! Anyway, I’m finally done with this! no more endless worries about the PT! No more days of anxiety! I can finally have my weekends back!
Lastly, if you want to ask me if I get to choose all over again, will I still choose to take a manual car in a school despite everything involved. I will say yes. I feel that the post I’ve written till now doesn’t really elaborate on the pros of learning a manual car, and in a school, but I’m honestly tired now. Maybe I’ll reply in the comments if anyone is even interested to hear about it.
Good luck to you! You can do this!
Edits for clarification, and little bits here and there which I forgot when I wrote it the first time. Thanks for the comments and reward!

Additional Edits: The instructors' system
You will be assigned to a group of instructors, and you will likely get the instructors within this grouping. They will try to assign the instructor you've met most often to you. Instructors are split into 2 shifts, and they alternate each week. Shift 1: 8:15a.m., 10:20a.m., 12:30pm. Shift 2: 3:20pm, 6pm, 8:20 p.m.. One group will take the whole of Saturday, and one group will take the whole of Sunday. So, if one instructor works the morning slot this week and Saturday, it's likely that he will work the afternoon shift and the sunday slot next week. However, this is not for certain, and just a general guide. If you dislike an instructor and you've seen him several times, good luck, it's likely you will keep seeing him in his shift. How to avoid an instructor without going through the hassle of blocking him? Click on the "book an instructor" for that session and see if he is available. If the name is there, it means he will be working, and I suggest you just book another instructor to avoid him. If his name is not there, he's not working and good for you.
